I am new so I hope no one thinks I am an idiot. Anyway I have been a technician at a Chevy dealer for about the last 10 yrs or so but I have never really delt in the aftermarket of Car Audio I have always been more concerned in going fast than sounding good. Anyway I helped out a local Sound Shop with a Remote Start they had installed in a 2005 Chevy Uplander a few months ago and he made me the offer of selling me a DVD/NAV kit for cost so I took him up on his offer and got him to order me a Kenwood KVT-815DVD and a KNA-DV4100 to go with it. I installed it last week end and I love it. I ordered a Sirius Tuner for it so I can take out the Plug and Play unit I currently have. And I have decided to go ahead and upgrade the speakers and such while I am at it. But I have no Idea where to start. I am not really into that much Rap music so I am not looking for huge subs or base (not sure if I want subs at all) I am thinking of just replacing the stock speakers with some really good componet speakers and amping them out. But I don't know what to buy. The main reason I am not really interested in Subs is space. I have a 2000 Silverado and with the Nav Unit, Head Unit Tuner, Sat Tuner, and soon to be Amp and Crossover I don't think there will be space for a sub under the rear seats. So my question is what speakers to go with I have hear alot of good stuff about Memphis Audio but don't know what else is out there. And as far as an Amp what size would I go with I figure a 4 channel but don't have a clue on power output. would I need a Crossover or Capaciter?? If so what recomendations would you suggest. Sorry for the long read. I will frequent the boards for a while and try to help as much as I can. I am sharp wen it come to electronics esp in GM stuff and Have access to wire diags. So if I can help let me know.
Thanks
Chris Wilson
Hey Chris, Ive got an 02 Silverado. I put an 8 inch kicker solobaric under the rear seat. I built the box myself. $20 bucks for a sheet of 3/4 MDF. There are also a couple companies that make boxes just for that truck. If you decide you want subs and would like more info on any of these options shoot me a pm. In the front doors I used a set of MB Quart 6 1/2 inch separates with a 1 inch tweeter. In the rear doors I just used a set of 4x6 plate speakers. Clarion if I remember right. The whole thing sounds pretty good. I used a Kenwood 4 channel amp for the door speakers. I believe it's rated at 40x4. For the sub I used a Rockford Fosgate 401s I think. I would say use good quality speakers making the front your priority. Then check the RMS power ratings and get an amp in your price and power range. I have the sub and both amps under the rear seat. There is more room under there than you think. You could even fit two subs under there. Here is a link for you to check out. https://www.crutchfield.com/S-QuPEpqSInY5/cgi-bin/ProdGroup.asp?g=530 If you need any help let me know I am pretty familiar with this truck.
Go to some shops in your area and listen to as much stuff as possible!! Differant companies make differant sounding speakers, so make sure you find something you like before you fork over the cash.
Usually a good component set for the front, and some coaxials for the back work good. Get a good amp for the front speakers and run the rears off the HU.
Dont bother with a capacitor, a bigger alernator is the way to go. But if you only want a small system, it will not be pulling enough current to make a bigger alt. nessecary.
