This was a topic here a couple days ago, so I thought I'd link those interested up to a quite fascinating discussion taking place on another board.
Dan Wiggins, Adire's ceo, has some very informative long posts toward the end of the discussion regarding this topic.

New Project: 2003 Pathfinder
I'm a guy who can kick back in a room full of lawyers, but if they were MDs, engineers or scientists I would soon get glassy-eyed. I can hang with theory disguised with some homespun f'rinstances, but I've got a long way to go before I can hang with the conversations in some of those diyaudio threads. But I know it would do me well because I'm about to start working on a center channel myself.
DYohn brought some speaker design software to the table the other day, and I've started trying it out. I did a short search this morning and so far I'm going to check out (using these programs) these Dayton 6" mids with this Dayton silk tweeter in a MTM arrangement. I'm not sure what exactly the tweets are, but I'm going to try for a smooth transition from center channel to the main mids. My mains have these mids which I pictured a while ago on this forum. But I'll continue to check out those interesting threads you bring up, kfr01!
I've been lucky with what I've put together so far...
"But I've talked long enough about myself.....What do YOU think of me?" lol
Yeah, most of the threads on diyaudio.com go beyond my level of knowledge very quickly. I can follow the math and the arguments - but I don't know enough to determine who is right and wrong. However, I've been taught, both in my former programming career and in now in law school, that issue spotting is at least 50% of the battle. So, while the threads are often over my head and the _substance_ is taking some time to learn, lurking on that site has introduced me to countless potential issues.
I've also checked out the FRD software over the weekend a bit. What do you think? Which modules are using?
Those Dayton drivers (the mids especially) look pretty sexy, and the frequency response looks great too. They look like fantastic drivers for the price. Let me know if you order and what your listening impressions are.
Finally, I doubt the success with your previous projects have been luck. One look at the crossovers for your dipole speakers displays a great attention to detail.

Thanks, dude. (See what I'm sayin' about lawyers?) I'm going by the FRD tools guide to start off with. Have to say I haven't accomplished much yet. My learning curve wouldn't let a marble gain momentum!
Haha, awesome find. I was reading that a while ago, and totally forgot about it. I will have to get back in there where I left off.
I always enjoy reading my boss' posts as they are always VERY informative. That and reading them allows me to absorb the material much better. I ask him questions all the time at work, but have to re-ask the same ones a lot of the time because it just doesn't absorb completely. It's not that he's a bad teach, because as you can see he is great at putting things into more laymens terms. But I'm just a visual learner. I learn best when he has a dry-erase board nearby.
BTW, if you want to see some other neat posts/threads, here's some links:
https://caraudiotalk.com/forum/index.php?s=4de9afcd98c70416a6b9e89a34dfdd4c&showtopic=2384 This link has one of the best description of not only what theile/small parameters are, but also how they inter-relate to one another. It is a great way to understand what changes when you add more mass to a cone, or stiffen the suspension, etc. Of course there is also a great deal more about speakers as well. I really enjoyed that thread.
https://www.carsound.com/cgi-bin/UBB_CGI/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=1;t=021545;p=1 Here's a debate he was in that brought about our "Car Audio Cabling" tech paper. If you want to know about all about how noise radiates into your system, then this is the everst of information for you.
https://forum.soundillusions.net/article.php?a=223 I posted this not too long ago as a seperate thread. This is a question/answer chalkboard where Dan answers questions on an online magazine. There is some great information on material selection in speaker design, as well as some good pointers on crossover design.
From there I just recommend searching for his name on different forums. I have found a wealth of information that way.

When the arguments involve him, I usually know who is right and who is wrong even before reading the arguments. I have yet to see him be wrong in these arguments because he won't say it if he isn't sure. And when the debate gets really fueled and they just won't listen, he will go get our Chief Technical Officer, Dr. David Hyre and he will school them. I saw this happen once in a discussion where Dan Wiggins and Mark Seaton (Servodrive) were arguing with Richard Clark (Car Sound writer) about how mass doesn't effect the transient response of the driver. That was an incredible thread over at the Car Sound forum that unfortunately got deleted (I wonder why).
