Hiya all. I have an old mazda 323 78'. At present i'm running a pionner 10" 400watt rms sub off a 2x150watt rms amp. As well as just some crappy vdo 6x9's and dodgy sony headunit. My headlights dim like crazy and also the bass is not as smooth as it could be. So i was wondering would a cap solve my problem or would i be looking at going all out for a new alternator and battery?

You would be better off with going all out with a new alternator and battery. Also upgrade your existing wiring from your alternator to your battery and ground wiring.
Here is a good article on Caps: https://pub51.ezboard.com/fcaraudioknowledgefrm7.showMessage?topicID=33.topic

If your headlights are dimming you should consider putting a cap on your system. It will save you from replacing your alternator unless already it is bad. Then you will have to replace all of the above.

In my personal opinion, Caps are a waste of money. They don't work under all conditions, they only work under very few conditions. If you want a permanent solution, you need increase your alternator output. If you want more details as to my reasonings, all of the info is in this link: https://pub51.ezboard.com/fcaraudioknowledgefrm7.showMessage?topicID=33.topic

Definitely a upgraded alternator would be the answer. The cost on the other hand is different. If you can afford the alternator go for it.
