I have a 97 mitsubishi eclipse. it has a motorized antenna that keeps breaking on me. it will get stuck and not come down. so i decided to get a traditional "whip" antenna.

i took the motor and antenna out and put the new whip antenna in. but now the radio wont turn on. i then cut the wire to the power antenna lead on the radio but that didnt help.

so i put the old motor and old antenna back in and now the radio works. very strange...

the next thing i did was keep the motor in with the power connections and ground but unplugged the old antenna and plugged the new antenna back in. the radio doesn't work.

it seems that the radio wont turn on unless the motor and old antenna are plugged in.

is there anyway to get around this? id appreciate any help with this.

the radio is grounding through the antenna coax lead, when you unplug it, no ground......no radio.  try mounting the whip antenna properly into the fender, not spoiler, and try again.
