Do you lose any sound quality or overall efficiency of the subs when you run an open air or reverse style setup? And what noticable sounds differences will there be between an open air setup and a typical sealed enclosure?

When you say open air, do you mean free air?  If so, then you will loose a GREAT deal of output from them.  You need to put them in an enclosure to allow them to work right.  Or are you talking about Infinite Baffle?

You won't get any audible difference between standard mount and reverse mount (usually called inverse mount) as long as you adjust the phase.
