Ok, I ordered a W7 and FedEx lost it, it's been 3 weeks and today the driver just shows up out of the blue with it. I had written it off as gone and already talked myself into waiting on Adire. Anyway, I slapped a sealed box together quickly (JL's specs) and threw it in the Jeep. Don't get me wrong, it ain't quiet at all, but it just ain't loud enough. If I build a bandpass for it, will it sound like arse? And how much more SPL should I look forward to? And how sensitive is a bandpass when it comes to exact volumes (I wanna make it primarily FG)? I still think I'm just gonna use this to get me by until I can get a set of Brahmas, but that may be a few months.
Is this even the right direction?

A bandpass enclosure would be a real waste of a W7 unless you want to compete, and even then there are far better speakers for a BP application. W7 in a proper sized sealed enclosue should sound pretty darn good. If you want more SPL, build a ported enclosure tuned to about 32Hz. How are you powering it?
If you want to build a BP simply because you want to try it out, get a cheap Pioneer or Rockford speaker to play with so if you blow it you won't be out big dollars. And to answer your question, yes a BP enclosure is very sensitive to exact size and proper construction geometry since the whole "box" is just a big port.
Oh, and I don't know what you mean by "I wanna make it primarily FG"? What's FG?

Fiberglass? I think...

It all reminds me of something that Molière once said to Guy de Maupassant at a café in Vienna: "That's nice. You should write it down."
Yeah Fiberglass. It's powered by an MRD-M1001 and at 3 ohms I'm guessing it's getting around 750 watts, which is what JL says is optimal. I think I have enough MDF left to build a ported box. I'm gonna go do that right now.

Have you messed around with the settings on the amp alot? Alpine's amps seem to be....well...different to set up because of their "all digital" design

Well, about two hours after my last post I had a ported box (also built to JL's specs) and a large grin on my face. The reason I asked about the bandpass was because I just didn't see the ported box making that much of a difference. IT DID. This is by far the loudest single sub system I've ever had and there is little to no SQ difference between the sealed and ported boxes. Now since I have a fear of right angles, I have to transfer this design into a fiberglass box. I'm sure that will be rather challenging, but if wasn't, it just wouldn't be any fun would it?
