04 Durango head unit

I am wiring a power to my head unit. I have it taped into the fuse to a known 12V switched fuse. When I test the wire at the fuse box i get 12V but when I test at the end of the wire (stereo side) I get nothing. Can someone help me out here. I am trying to finish this up tonight. BTW I have an 04 Durango so I can't just use the factory wire. Thanks.

Possibly a break in the wire? that is really the only thing I can think of it being.If you are using a digi multimeter then check the wire for coninuity... If it has 12 volt at the start of the wire then there is no reason (besides a break) that it shouldnt have power at the end.

Also what gauge wire are you using?

Yes it is digital. I just cut the wire off a spool. I guess i could have gashed it when running it through the dash. And it is 18 gauge wire.

BTW sould wire length play a factor in this? I am not really good with electrical.

Yeah definatly try the wire for continuty.. I personally cannot see any other reason for it not to have power at the stereo side of the wire.

Also what rating if the fused 12volt wire you tapped into? just make sure you picked one with the suitable requirements for your deck.

Like I said I don't really know too much about electricty. And I am new to a multi meter. How do I check for continuty? BTW thanks for helping me.

Put the DMM on the ohm setting and check the wire, if it shows a small resistance it is good,If it shows OL (mine does this) then there is no contact thorugh the wire.Some DMMS also have a setting for continuty that beeps when something has continuty.

Also I never thoguht about checking the fuse as i re-read your post I made the mistake and thoguht you meant that you checked it where the wire running to your headunit was conncted to the wire that was fused.

Thanks guys. I got it working. The fuse was fine. For some reason the wire was not carring the current. So I said screw it and taped the power outlet (cig lighter) that is connected to the same fuse and cut a shorter wire and now it works like a charm.
