What is the largest voice coil on a sub. I was told that there is an 18" sub with a 6" voice coil. This just sounds wrong. So if anyone can clear this up for me I would appreciate it.

OK, the driver on the Adire site is called the "Tumult", and why would you have a problem with a 6 inch voice coil on an 18" woofer? Have you ever seen a six inch woofer with a 3" voice coil? It is one of my all time favorites - the Morel MW series of woofers all have a three inch voice coils. I don't see why an 18 couldn't have a 6" coil. It all depends on what the builder has in mind... What he wants to achieve.

As afar as an answer to your orignal question, I have seen an 18 inch driver with a 4.5 inch VC, but I can't remember for the life of me where it was. I *THINK* it was made by Orca, a now defunct woofer manufacturer, who also had a 24 inch woofer in their product line-up.

It all reminds me of something that Molière once said to Guy de Maupassant at a café in Vienna: "That's nice. You should write it down."

The Tumult actually uses a 3" voice coil.

I know of one sub that uses a 6" voice coil.  However keep in mind that a larger diameter voice coil isn't necessarily a good thing.  You would have to compensate for a lot of extra moving mass, inductance, and tooling costs as there really aren't standard parts available for something like that.

I know that the MTX   Jackhammer also uses a pretty large diameter voice coil.  However I am unsure what size it actually is.

That's the one I was thinking of.  I see he still hasn't released any parameters yet.

If you want some more information about it, we had an interesting conversation with the owner a couple months ago.  Here's the link: https://forum.elitecaraudio.com/showthread.php?threadid=106511

"We are now shipping the "Monsters" as Vance Dickason and other industry veterans have discribed them."

Uh oh, here comes MonsterCable and its horde of lawyers!  Carlos, you're really asking for it now.

I read the first 4 or 5 pages of that thread...oh MAN!  That's a tough business.  You better know your stuff before you trot it out to the audio hobbyists!

That thread was a great read. I'm so glad threads like that exist to inform customers about the products and people behind the products they could be wasting their hard-earned cash on.

I think the moderator on the last page of the thread summed it up nicely.

I read the whole thread and find it amusing that as soon as someone gave the guy a chance to put up or shut up, he shut up.

The online market is like that.  The customer base is much more educated.  They have seen, and possibly been fooled previously by the "marketing talk" used by so many of the Circuit City brands, and are much more skeptical about claims like that.  You can't just say that your sub is the best without backing it up.  And you really don't want to make un-supported claims about your product being better than another manufacturers product.  Especially when the other manufacturer is owned by Dan.  posted_image
