I am going to install a 7" flip-down monitor in an Excursion. I have installed TV's a few times in different cars and placed MDF on the other side of the head liner to screw the monitor into. Is this the proper and best way to do this. I know that the head liner will not support the monitor on its own and the screws will just pull out of it. Also if anyone knows anything I need to watch out for in an Excursion let me know.

as long as you screw the piece of mdf  to a brace in the roof  W/OUT screwing through the roof then you should be ok

Is that the most common way to attach a screen?  I installed one on my suburban with some screws or bolts I bought at auto  zone a long time ago.  I can recall exactly how it locked the bracket in place but it might have been a screw, a nut  and a big washer.  The bracket is still up there holding on strong.

I glue MDF to th roof sometimes in between the headliner and the roof  and then use really short screws.
