Warning Concerning Alterstart

Do not order a product through this company. I ordered my "180 amp" alternator. I received it in early February, installed and it put out 18.22v, good by battery. Sent back to get the voltage regulator fixed, supposedly nothing wrong. Got it back last week, installed it today at a profressional electrical shop and everything, tested out 14 1/2v like it is supposed to. Problem is, these a***oles gave me an alternator that puts out at best like 119a at ONE time, everything else registers under 110a. Now I gotta PAY to remove it and put it back in AGAIN because THEY f**ked up. Two times they sent me a bad product. I will be talking to a lawyer in the next week about this issue. I will also be informing them of my intent to take legal action.

I repeat, DO NOT ORDER THROUGH THESE a***oleS.

I'm sorry for any foul language but here is a break down of my money:

$200 for 180a Alt.
$42 for shipping/handling and a new power cable(4g).
Dropped like $80 for the old removed and new put in plus cable.
Fried $60 battery(replaced).
Also another $80 on the install for the old alt and battery so I had a VEHICLE.
$20 to send back.
$116 to have it put back in again to find out it won't even do 180a.
Oh and $80 to tow my car to the shop when my battery was fried.
Total: $678

And now these f**kholes want me to pay for it again to send back out for a replacement.

Any advice on what action to take to avoid legal sh*t or best legal course would be AWESOME. These dicks are dead in the water now. I'm so beyond pissed and insulted.

EDIT: At this point I'm considering a full refund and reimbursement for the failures this item caused and then purchasing 2 150a Alts from the Napa and having a dual alt setup now. Will cost me like 1/2 of that.

Sorry to hear you have had so many problems with them. Hopefully I will not have the same problems when it comes time to order my alt from the company I am going to go with. Anyway, good luck with getting your mess resolved.

Thats exactly why i say steer away from those companys that say 200 amp alt for $200.  To make a real 200 amp alt it costs approx $400.

Actually no it doesnt, there is no extra machining cost
Go to any electrical shop here in south florida and you will get quoted 1 dollar per amp, if you are paying more than that your paying for a chrome housing or a bigger case but the raw amperage is a 1 dollar per amp

I had a 75 amp stock alternator and I had a shop make me a 150amp one and it cost 150 plus 40 for installation and tax and when I went to the dealer it put out exactly what It stated 150 amps at 13.8 at 2000RPM 100 amps at 12.5 votls at my idle speed of 1000 rpm

So I find your logic flawed its nothing personal, maybe in your part of the country its like that but not down here

I have to agree with Skold, too. ESPECIALLY with a domestic alternator. Those cases are big enough, that all they need to do is rewind 'em, and dump in the proper diodes. A buck an amp actually sounds a little high for a rewind. My '01 Civic 165A alternator from Alterstart was 318 dollars, including freight, and I installed it myself.

It is a new throughout alternator, also, and 2 bucks an amp was right in line with what I had seen for *NEW* HO alternators for Hondas. It will do 165A all day long as well. I am sorry you have had trouble with this company, I have bought SEVERAL alternators from them, (mostly Honda repacements) and they have always been good to me. I have never had to return one, I have always installed them with #4 power cables under the hood, and I have always made sure they were BIG ENOUGH FOR THE APPLICATION. ANY alternator will fail sooner than expected if overworked.

I posted several times about the same people (alterstart). I got the runaround from them also. I finally got mine back and on the car, but I could swear that it doesn't put out what they say it does. When I get my new amp I will know more about its quality. Right now I'm using a small amp on my subs because the Crossfire I had quit on me. I wouldn't recommend them to anybody ever again.

Whell, i was referring to mechman alts, for a 200 amp alt that is hot rated i paid about $500 actually, but it puts out 200 amps (hot) at idle, and a steady 14.4 volts, even with the bass cranked from my 2 very very powerful amps.  I had it tested and it put out 280 amps (cold) 14.4 v at 1000 rpm.  Thats whay higher than there specs indicate.

Basically my alternator is a Mcintosh,,,and Alterstart is the Pyramid/Legacy.

Shure i paid a boat load of money, but i got a quality product that im confident will be working at every start up.

Remember, the Alternator is the heart of your car.
