Higher ohm tweeter ok?

soon as that tax return gets here I'm looking a set of XXX mids. My question is since they are only availible as mids(no component set yet) can I use a tweeter that has a higher rated ohm like the Morel MDT-30. The specs say 8ohm impendence and a DC resistance of 5.2ohm. Would the tweeters just see less power and not be as loud? I know the XXX mids are 2ohms. I have a set of JL ZR series x-overs from a previous install which I was planning to use, but I'm wondering if all this will sound like arse. If any one has any better ideas I would love to hear them. The XXX mids are the only part of this that I don't want to change, everything else is up for debate. Thanks in advance.

You don't want to use that old crossover.  Passive crossovers are designed for specific speakers.

If you plan to mix and match and care about sound you need to design a custom passive crossover or go active.  Going active in a car is easier.  Electronic crossovers and amplification are cheap.  Bi-amping has many other benefits as well.  At the top of the list for your purposes is the ability to fine tune and independently adjust the gains on the various amplifiers.

Just keep in mind that you will need an equalizer when going active as well.  This is because there is equalization built into the passive crossovers that you will lose when going active.    I don't know if I would call it easier for the standard person as it takes a lot more to tweak it to where you want.  However it does give you much more flexibility.

I agree that a couple bands of eq is nice if going active. I do not agree that it is _necessary_ when going active for most in car users.

In fact, I'd assert that a sufficiently steep active crossover, set at a comfortable crossover point for both drivers, with a simple radio shack SPL meter to help match levels, can get pretty close to most canned passive crossovers. ESPECIALLY considering that passive crossovers highly depend on the driver orientation, spacing, and axis. The ideal orientation used when constructing the passive crossover will almost never be realized by most users in car. i.e. tweeter up on dash, woofer down in door off axis.

Intuition tells me that unless the driver is unruly a user may obtain decent results with intelligently set active crossover points -- without an eq.

Correct me if I'm wrong.

So if I wanted to go the active route I would want something like the Audiocontrol DQX? Then could I bi-amp the tweets and mids? And to steven, is there such thing as a xbl2 tweet coming out anytime soon or at all. If not, do you have any recommendations on a tweet that might sound good with the XXX mids? Thanks again.

That depends on what you mean by soon.  Dan has mentioned online about working on a tweeter with 3.5mm of throw and using XBL^2.  However I wouldn't expect it anytime soon.

I tried to use that link but it wouldn't load. My plan is now to buy the Eclipse CD8455. Could I use it's front ouput for the tweets and it's rear output for the xxx mids while using the 8455's crossover? I am looking at some different amps to use if I bi-amp them. Audison LRx 4.300, Zapco reference 360.4, JBL PX300.4, or either a TRU Technology T-4.100 or a TRU TO3-4.150. And I still need a to know where I can get some tweeters by themselves off the web. I have some TN45's from a set of Focal 165v's, but I would like to see what's out there that's better. Thanks again in advance.

Yes, you can use the deck's crossovers. You even have a few bands of quasi-parametric eq on the deck to help smooth any problems out.

That should work great, and if you see room for improvemnt you can also upgrade to some other crossover and/or eq later.
