ok, i have a kind of weird problem. When my cars ignition is ON but the car is not running my voltage on the amp reads ~10volts instead of 12V (which it used to read before problems started), however the amp and subs work fine. When I turn the car on it reads 12V instead of 14V and the amp goes into protection mode as soon as the car starts, then however cuts IN and OUT randomly.
Also, I can slightly hear my alternator in the background.
Anybody know what the problem??? Any advice appreciated.
Thanks in advance

I am not 100% sure but I have had similar problems. For me it was a bad connection between the battery and ground. I could not tell visually though. Check the resitance between the negative post on the battery or amp and the metal of the car. It should be minimal.

sounds like you have a bad battery, you should have around 12V with the car ignition off, and around 14.4V with the car running.

i have the same problem with mine...i cant run my amp right now with the car on, cause instead of 12V i get 11V and as it is i'm straining the alt. I think the reason my battery is like tihs is cause i was running my system for quite awhile and i think i screwed up my alt a bit and the battery (I killed my alt while driving and then the battery died, I've charged the battery a few times)...I'm getting a new battery soon and then an alt, but i cant run my amp till i get the alt.  Hopefully its not the same type of problem.  However i still can showw off the system a bit for my freinds with the car off...no problems there.

I had the battery and alternator checked at autozone, they are fine. I'm going to try to reconnect the - now.

You said you had both alt and batt tested.Have you checked to see what voltage you are getting at the batt with the engine on and off? If they are both good then check your ground wires not only at the batt but also at your amps.

By the way, do you have a cap installed? I was having that type problem a couple of years ago, (back when I thought a cap was of some value). It turned out to be the cap was my problem. I disconnected it and had no more problems. Just a thought. I know what autozone told you, but it seems like a battery issue to me.
