Hi,

Today i installed my magnat 6x9's, amp and subwoofer. We managed to get it all working on a test, then as we tried to put the head unit back in its slot to tidy it all up, we got some sparks and the car died! After a few minutes the cars power did come back and we were able to start it, however the head unit (Kenwood KMD-671r) hasnt come on since!

Also the central locking doesnt seem to be working now, although all other electrics seem ok.

Could someone please advise me! What have i done, have i potentially c**ked up the electrics? Im kinda worried cause i only got the car today and i may have blown the warranty etc we had on it??!

Check all of your fuses in your fuse panel to see if you have blown a fuse, with a grounded short like that, that's what the fuses are supposed to protect. Also check the fuse on the back of the HU.

The HU fuse and the central locking may be on the same fuse in the panel. This may be why you are having problems with that, or it may be tied into the head unit, depending on the vehicle.

OK, this is starting to look a little bit better. I saw a car audio specalist/mechanic today.

The central locking, head unit and cig lighter are on the same fuse and as none of them are working it seems that must have blown.

The guy said to take out the power from the headunit, put in a new fuse (which i have some spares anyway) and then im gonna take it back to him. He explained that there isnt any point just replacing the fuse and starting it up cause it must have been my wiring that blew it, so hes gonna check over it and hopefulyl correct it then we should be all ok.

can you explain why the car went dead for a short while though when the fuse blew?

its a VW Polo MK4 1999 V reg
