ok, someone tried telling me a JL watt is different from a sony watt. now i know that a JL amp is much more sophisticated(sp?) and efficient then a sony amp so it will sound much better. but as far as a a watt is concerned, isnt an equal JL watt identical to a sony watt?
i looked up the meaning of watt and found this...
watt   Audio pronunciation of "watt" ( P ) Pronunciation Key (wt)
n. Electricity Abbr. W

An International System unit of power equal to one joule per second

so technically there is no difference between one equal JL and sony watt right?

You are correct, there is no difference between one JL watt and one sony watt.

Your friend was trying to tell you that:
1) The JL has less distortion; and
2) The JL is more honestly rated.

There are no mandatory standards for rating car audio amplifiers. Manufacturers can use different methods that inflate their numbers.

JL has been known to be more on the honest side.
Sony has been known to be on the inflation side.

This stuff is what your friend meant.

A watt is a watt is a watt....................

I think kfr01 has cleared up what your friend was trying to say, if we are translating correctly what you are saying.

Sony watts are custom manufactured in a special factory in Okinawa.  They rise early every morning and do calisthenics before they fall into orderly rows to await the day's initial demands.  They are far more efficient and productive than ordinary (i.e."JL") watts due to enhanced discipline and better teamwork.  Sony watts can produce more output per peiod of time with a higher degree of accuracy and fewer rejects ( aka "distortion.")  You can hear them chanting "xpolde" while they work.   Sony watts often, if they fail to produce, self-destruct as brilliant fire balls.  While this is an amazing display of corporate loyalty and cultural integrity, it can be annoying to the western user who simply does not understand the Sony Way.  The bright red Sony case helps hide the flames.

ANyway, I think your friend may have been alluding to the way that some manufactures over rate their equipment. Like pyramid says their amp can produce 1000w, but it is really closer to 100w. Whereas a Nakamichi amp that says it can deliver 1000w actually does deliver 1000w.

So I guess you could say, yes, there is a difference between some manufactures watts. But this is a misnomer, they arn't actually different, it's just that some manufactures rate their product higher then it is.
