i just called EVERYWHERE in this lovely state(wisconsin) i can think of to find a HO alt for my car...(97 mazda protege LX) and they all told me the same thing....half of the work for the alternator is done by the brain box which i guess is tied in with it...its like the voltage regulator and everything, it is even tied in with the fuel flow management...now this is bogus...im stuck with a puny 70-75 amp alternator and there is nothing i can do about it :( now i have to see if i can even get away with running 2 optima batteries in there with that alt. on my voltage gauge i put in with the system, the car idles at 14.7v and when driving its at 15.1v which i guess is awsome but i still need the extra boost....what do you guys think? think im screwed on this part? lol

Well, I guess it depends on your plans.  Have you tried Mazda directly to see if they make a "heavy duty" alternator (with all the necessary electronics) for your car?  It'd be a lot of money, probably, if they do make one.  With a 75 amp alt, you should be able to support 300 or so watts of amplifier power without any problem, so you could go for high-efficiency speakers and get decent SPL.  Or, again depending on how much you want to spend, you could have a bracket fabricated and run a second alternator dedicated to your stereo system.  Check with auto electrical or higher-end car stereo shops in your area, or contact Zena and get a quote.

I applaud you for thinking of this and planning your power system.  Far too many people leave this to last and then wonder why their "awesome" system sounds wimpy and kills their battery and sometimes the entire car's electrical system too...

Thats bull, an alternator is an alternator.  What ever follows after that is just that.  Nothing can actually be attached to the alternator to control your car other than the regulator.

Have you called specialy companys such as www.mechman.com , www.mean-green.com , ohio generator?

Go get a junkyard alt and have it rebuilt. It shouldn't be a much a problem doing it this way.

Dommonick is one of the best alternator builders in the world!    I would put my name against that.    He just recently started selling on ebay.       He is a large supporter and competitor in the Usaci and DB drag curcuits

Just see about getting it- or another one- rewound.

15volts while driving is pretty darn good IMO..

Not exactly sure what you're trying to say, but I can say that computer controlled alternators have been in use since at least the mid 80's with Chrysler.. I can state that GM is currently using the ECM to control the alternator (I can hook a scan tool to a GM car and turn the alternator on and off), and a quick google search shows that Mazda is indeed using the car's computer to control the alternator.

All that stuff is attached after the power is made from the alternator, shure it may be bolted to the outside of the alt, but an alt is an alt on the inside.  Therefor you can indeed upgrade the output capabilitys of the alt.  I would love to see a picture of one of these alts, , i bet its the exact same as any other alt.

Here is a link to Alterstart, and their Protege alternator. This is the 70A direct replacement, but call the number, and see if they have an HO version like the link above says...

It all reminds me of something that Molière once said to Guy de Maupassant at a café in Vienna: "That's nice. You should write it down."

i just called alterstart and they can make me a 150a one for $299 so im jumping on this. thanks for the link :)

also i dont think i could run a dual alternator set-up because this alt. is so small and barely fits as it is i dont think a second would fit. i know my alt. is tiny.....

so here is my "big 3" plans...

1)150amp alt.

2)1/0 welding cable for engine ground kit and power from batt. to alt.

3) dual optima battery setup.

what do you guys think? when im finished ill be running 4 rockford fosgate 1000a2 amps, either 4 12s or 4 15s(i wanna go for more then 2 subs for show but i still want it to perform good. and 2 600a2 rockford amps for 2 sets of MB QUART components one set in rear and one set in back to take place of 6x9s...and 8 inchsubwoofers...one in each door panel...this will be for both SQ and SPL but mostly everyday driving.

I can tell you from experience, BEWARE. Alterstart screwed me and I have seen lots of negative stuff on them on this site. I would look around some more.
