How much air space / volume, after wood, do you have to work with?

12's are a damn hard fit, for what its worth I have had better luck with doing dual 10's and porting the enclosures, but mabye you already looked down that road. From the two you listed I prefer the kickers but have limited experience with the memphis line, compounded byy the fact that you didnt list which series of memphis you were comparing to.

try blaupunkt overdrives...200 watts rms, 20-200hz, and the mounting depth, ok, get ready for this, only 2.2".  retail is only 165.00 each.

otherwise don't even consider the memphis if you have kicker as an option. the vr's will smash almost every sub memephis has in production.
