Two 10" 300w to one 12" 600w, Opinions?

I am currently running a pair of Diamond TM3 truck style subs that are rated to handle 250w rms. They are both being run off of a Diamond D3600.1 at a 1 ohm load for 300w to each sub.

I am considering removing my center seat on my truck and having a custom box built for the location and loading it with a single 12" subwoofer that can handle as much of that amplifer as possible and still retain the best SQ I can. Has anyone else here done this? What gains and losses would I expect to get? I assume a bit more low end at the loss of some seating space. It would also allow me to unstack my amps and have one behind each seat.

Any recommendations on a single 12" subwoofer? I like Diamond stuff but I am open to any good reputable brand. The local dealer here has Diamond, JL, and Alpine stuff mostly that I would be interested in, unless Pioneer or Planet Audio make a good SQ sub that I am unaware of, he is authorized for all of that and is an Alpine F1 status dealer as well. There is also an Eclipse dealer within 50 miles of me as well so that is another option.

Benifits, lower octave repoduction is better, higher output.

Disadvantage. if the exact same model subs the 12 wont be as clean as the 10's, , but if your get a higher quality 12" you will gain in SQ and the lower ocatave benifits also.

How much air space so you think you will have to play with?  If you like the diamond products stick with them. Diamond, JL, Alpine, Eclipse are all excellent products.  Figure out how much air space you will have to play with, then check out the subs based on the box they are going into.

I would be getting a better model as the 12" TMs/D3s only take about 250w rms, and I want to put 600w to a single driver in a 1 ohm config or maybe 2 ohm at around 450w. As far as airspace, I am not sure yet what I will have, I assume the box will be some form of hybrid truck behind seat box and a smaller area that fills where the seat is now and would also server as the space needed to mount a much deeper driver than I can regularily fit.

I was thinking a D612D2, that can be wired to 1 ohm for 600w right? Or am I better off staying at 2 ohm and about 450w. I could also go with a D910D2 or maybe even a D912D2, but that would be underpowering them a bit. I believe the dealer in my area still has last years models as well, so maybe a M6 instead?

Also is it better to fire to the rear, side, or front? Standard truck boxes fire forward, but with a custom setup I can fire it whichever way I want, I was thinking rear would be best.

I would be selling the TM10D4s and their boxes which are almost new to fund this, any idea how much more I will have to spend to get this done?

Well, If you TRULY want to maintain the best SQ possible, you would not worry about loading that amp to those kinds of loads... ANYTIME you load an amp like that, your distortion goes up, your damping goes down, your efficiency goes out the window... ALL BAD THINGS. Personally, I would get a VERY GOOD quality DVC 8 ohm driver, parallel the voice coils, and run them on a 4 ohm stable mono amp. OR, run a high power stereo amp on a DVC 4 ohm driver in stereo mode... YOu will get all of your good thing back. Control, lower distortion, better efficiency.

I can't really afford to get another amplifer, so that D3600.1 has to be part of the set up. It will run 300w at 4 ohm if I go that route, however I would still like to be able to get decent volume out of it as well.

I may go ahead and switch one of my current subs around to a 4 ohm load at 300w on the D3600.1 and see how that sounds for a day or two instead of running two of them at 1 ohm as I am now. I know I loose some SQ using the amp at 1 ohm, but will halving the power be able to get loud enough compared to my current setup and is the SQ loss really that extreme? I still want decent SPL to go along with it and it seems near impossible to get a significant of both in a single cab truck.

With 300 watts driving a sub in a single cab truck, you should be able to rock. A friend currently has an Infinity 10.1DVC powered by an alpine f450 5 channel amp and I do beleive that the amp puts 250 or so to the sub. I have to say, Damn, sounded alot better and louder than I thought that it would.

  He has the driver firing down in a .65 ft3 sealed box that he custom made and it rocked the cab of his silverado. I, at least, was very impressed.

One Diamond DS12D2 shallow-mount sub, given 250 watts RMS...with an efficiency factor of 89...will be as loud as most other subs given 500 watts.  Wire the coils in series for a 4 ohm load on your mono amp and you will rock out with plenty of SQ.

I have a DVC sub made by Cerwin-Vega that has an efficiency of 90, given less than 200 watts in the trunk of my Taurus and it's almost too loud.  I have to turn it down unless I'm trying to attract attention!  It pounds the hell out of that car.

Build the box so that it performs well in the worst case scenario and, in return, it will reward you at all times.

After talking to the local dealer it seems that I will have to most likely pay alot more then I want to for any form of upgrade, the M6 12" runs about $350 and a TDX 10" would be almost $600. I am sure he would give me a deal on that and a custom box but it will still run at least $400 if not more, and I don't think my trade of my current truck boxes and TM3s in is worth more then $200 to them.

I can wire one of the TMs I have now to a 2ohm or 8 ohm load, but that doesn't seem like it will be enough at 8 ohm and too much for it at 2 ohm. Should I just leave my setup alone or do you think it's worthwhile to change things around at all? The boxes are each about .57 ft3 by the way if that makes a difference. I can also wire both to a 4 ohm load if I stick with a dual sub setup.

I wish there was some other people around that I knew were interested in this sort of stuff that I could have listen to it and see what they think. It seems like I am just trying to get more and going overboard when I really don't need to. Maybe I should just work on getting a set of Hexs and another amp for my fronts.
