I recently installed a system in my 95 suburban. It is 2 infinity reference 12's. They are dual 4 ohm. I also have a hifonics Brutus 1000d amp and a pioneer h/u. My question is my neighbor has a setup of an 800 watt amp and 2 kicker 12's the cheap ones in his explorer and they get much louder than mine. I don't really mind that but i know i have problems because after around 10-15 minutes of listening my amp stops powering my subs and i lose power. The only problem I can see causing this is that I used 8-guage because i had plenty left over from my brothers system. So if i replace the 8 with 4 guage will that solve my problems or is their something worse wrong with my system?

Definalty get rid of the 8 guage. You are starving the Amp and it is shutting down.

Is that the only amp that you are running? If not, run 0/1 guage from the battery to a distro block and 4 guage from the distro block to the amp. And don't forget to upgrade the ALT.

Also, make sure that your grounds are the same size as the power wires.

Whoa...8 gauge is really starving your amp there. You need to upgrade to 4 gauge power and ground at least.

One question...did the inline fuse in the + power cable for the amp blow ever?

Definitely upgrade to 4 gauge or better, and upgrade the alternator as was also recommended above.

If you have a blade type fuse under the hood, check the holder- a lot of times the plastic melts on one side or the other (we see this a lot on backyard type installs), and if you wiggle it the amp comes back on.  You still need to upgrade your wiring, but if this is the case, try and reroute your power to keep it away from heat sources.

Thanx, yea it blew 2 fuses under the hood and for about a month it worked but it just hasn't felt like it was doing what it should. I will definately upgrade to at least 4 gauge wire and ground. Thanx for the advice and i made sure my install was away from heat sources because this isnt my first time doing this I just tried to be cheapa nd it backfired.

Read my grounding sticky at the top of the forum, it will definitely apply in this case.
