I put a avic n1 in a customers car 2 months ago. A 99 bmw 5 series.  He took it in to get new rims and tires put on.  the battery went dead so they boosted the car and a check engine light appeared.  He took the car to the local bmw dealership and he said they were not able to read codes from the computer could this be that the factory head unit is not hooked up anymore.   Or is it more likely the monkey's that boosted the car did something wrong.    Also does anybody know how to clear check engine codes......any help would be greatly appreciated.

The most used method is to remove the battery posts but this is also the problem that caused the check engine light to appear in the first place ( from what your post states ). It can't get worse so you can try it again.

I don't see why or how the radio being removed would cause the dealer from reading the codes. At anyrate you should be in the clear on this one, they are the ones who caused the cel.

The light should be reset with a scan tool which the dealer would certainly have. Did they not reset it or, did it just come back on after they did? Was it ok for awhile after you installed the new radio or did he take it to get rims immediately afterward? At any rate the dealer should be able to reset it.

update:

turns out the tire shop killed the battery and when they boosted it.  they hooked the battery charger up with the key in the run position.  this cased a fault code.

when i picked up the car they told me they were unable to read what the code was.  which is crap.

so I took it to the dealership and they pulled the code.  the tire shop just unhooked the battery clearing the light but the code was still stored.  The dealer pulled the code told me what it was.

what a pain in the butt.  Like I needed that stress.

anyway thanks for the replys.....
