I just won a new 12" w7 sub for $416 shipped off ebay and now need to look into an amp and amp kit for it. w7 is listed at 750-1000 RMS so I need something strong but I don't want to buy a top of the line amp. Cost wise, I'd like to pay less than $500, and preferably less than I did for the sub, I need a 1 channel amp, it's going to strictly power the w7. I really don't want a long (in length) amp either, I'd like to mount it on the back of my seat. The JL 1000/1's are nice and recommended for the w7's, but those are costly and too long.
Also, what is there to look into for amp kits for the sub? Is 4 gauge good? Brands? Specifications to look for? Cost shouldn't be a problem, I just need something to make the sub sound nice

Wow, first of all, that was a deal for a JL W7! Good for you man! Check out Hifonics amp, they have low distortion and a great output, like the Brutus, up there in the watt rating too. MTX has some powerful amps too that won't break the 500 dollar mark and aren't too big.

Yeah, I can't wait to get it!
MTX is a great brand for amps, I have an MTX Thunder 564 hooked up to my front and rear speakers and it's very nice. I'll check out Hifonics, I'm new to the name. I want to explore outside of MTX I think for my sub amp unless I can find a great deal on one

Is Hifonics a cheap brand? I paid $150 for an MTX 564 560 watt amp!

You can look into a Phoenix Gold Xenon 1200.1, or a JBL 1220.1. But sorry to hear that you got the sub on e-bay. Just hope you don't ever need warrenty work done to it.

personally i wud run an amp that would power the JL past its RMS. why- cause any sub at that price and quality can be run well past rms. so i wud get a nice amp that takes it around 200-500 watts more than rms. but dont think that u have to run it at this all the time, u always need some backup. another thing is that you have to consider the fact that the JL runs at dual 3 ohm(not sure-could be dual 6). so running it at 1.5 or 3 ohms will need a good strong amp that is stable at these ohms. and finally- u must make sure that ur electrical system can handle the ants of such a powerful amp so first have your alternator and battery checked by a specialist for compatibility. i assure u that it will need changing unless u drive a h2 hummer-loool one more thing-hifinocs are rubbish ------------- 6* Rockford T2's

The 12" is SVC. You won't gain very much at all by pushing it past the RMS. The speaker can handle it, but then you end up spending more for power you don't need. ------------- Nik

thanks for all the tips, I'll probably underpower it for a while until I want to spend the money on a new battery and stuff.
I figured Hifonics might be crappy, the kind of amps at those low prices... maybe not the best quality?
As far as amp kits, any recommendations for the w7? 4 guage? what else?

HiFonics is not rubbish. It's not a JL or PPI or Zapco, but it is not an audiobahn either. It should perform just fine.

Hifonics can be found at most swap meets and flea markets, back in the day Hifonics was a reputable brand, they have since gone down hill. I don't care what anyone says. Save some money now and in the long run and get a high quality amp. MTX is a bigger step up than Hifonics. Your system is only as good as its weakest link, hence a lowsy amp to a great sub. no good. -------------
