Subject: How much power is required?
Date Posted: April 27, 2005 at 8:16 PM

I am putting speakers in my car with power handling of 200 watts. (Max power handling is 1000 watts).

I don't car about loudness, I only car about the quality of the sound. It just so happens that these speakers are rated at 200 watts.

Please recommed what is the mimum power that I can get away with making these speakers sound great.

The speakers that I am getting are morels and my "budget" is pretty much "exhausted".

Thanks in advance.

As a HUGE fan of all that is Morel, I can tell you the more power you have, the better they will sound, without exception.

We do need more information, however, to tell you "how much" you will need. I am personally using the old MW-162, rated 120RMS/1000peak, and I am running 370wpc to them, dedicated. My doors are bi-amped and bi-wired, with active crossovers. They are perfectly happy taking the 370 watts I am throwing at them, too.

Fill us in so we can help you a little better.

Let me start off by saying: Thanks for all your help.

Having said that they are: Morel Elate SW 6:

Nominal impedance: 4 ohm, Power handling 180 Watts, Transient power handling: 1000 W, Sensitivity (2.83 V/1M) 89 dB, Frequency Response: 25 - 4000 Hz. It has the MT-23 Tweeter ( impedance 6 ohm), power handing 130 W, and max Transient power handling 350 W, snsitivity (2.83 V/1M) 91 dB, Frequency response: 1400-25000Hz.

I was thinking of the alpine : MRVF 545  ;;;;  4 channel  125 x 4 ohms. Run each channel separetly therefore supply , I suppose, 125 watts per speaker,---Thanks

A bi-amped system with Morels is a spectacular option. The tweeters will receive a bit less than 125w, probably around 100 watts. It will not matter, though, being as their sensitivity is hotter than the woofers. Set your crossover for around 2K, both hi- (for the tweeter) and lo- (for the woofer) pass, and if possible, apply an 80Hz hi-pass to the woofer, so it won't flap. The 24Hz low frequency number stated will NEVER happen in a door, without flappin' like the dickens.

With a low cut in frequency like 2K for the tweeter, it will be imperative that you set your gains correctly, -make sure you stay well away from clipping! - a crossover point like this will lower the power handling appreciably.

Is the alpine MRVF 545  a bi amped system that you are reffering too? And if so, it sounds like I'm ok?

Ps: I am putting in xtreme Dynamats

Thanks.....................posted_image

Any 4 channel amp will allow bi-amping, so, yes, the Alpine will work...

Sorry to bother you again,

But what does bi-amping mean, so I make sure I bi-amp. Remember it is only 4 channel and one channel going to each speaker ( two channels to each woofer and two channels going to each twetter).

Thanks again

That IS bi-amping. Effectively running one channel to each driver, with either active (preferred) or passive frequency dividing networks (crossovers). 4 drivers, 4 channels of amplifier. This is exactly what you have.

Hmmm, I always thought "Bi-amping" means the amplifier swings both ways. posted_image

Sorry for the bad joke.  I just had to post it.

Not the amplifier, the woofer.  Interestingly it's rather rare among woofers to do any amp that comes along, but almost all tweeters are bi and very promiscuous.  posted_image
