Subject: Need False Faceplate tips

Trying to construct a false faceplate (using old doubl-din VW stock deck) for my 2002 Golf. I have managed to perfectly shave off just the plastic face of the old deck and glue the buttons on accordingly, etc. That part is done. It's about .2 inches thick. I need a way to suspend it over the new deck (Eclipse 8455) to hide it. Some kind of bracket, etc to come forward about .8" to cover it up is needed. I tried going to a plastic manufacturer, but they said to do a custom cut like that would be at least $300!!

Anybody have any suggestions how to go about this? Thanks!!

Are you trying to make it just a blank faceplate or a "fake" radio?

Im not sure what you need help with. But I have seen this done before except it was a single din radio. They cut out a piece of plastic(same size as the faceplate) and they removed the old buttons from the old radio and glued the buttons on the plastic piece. The "fake" faceplate doesnt necessarily have to lock in place like a real faceplate would, but rather just sit in place so burgulars wouldnt even bother stealing an "old" radio.

see if you can find brackets off an old eclipse cd player on ebay that's blown or something, and take it so the factory one would clip on to the detachable clips of your new cd player,,

I have my old radio's (VW stock) double-din face cut off from it's base and ready to be mounted. I just want to mount it over the new head unit so it hides it.

I'll try finding a old bracket and see if that can hold it into place.

That would make it easy, but the face of the new CD8455 does not come off. It uses the ESN network for security.

AHHH,. i didn't know that face wasn't a detatch, maybe you could do the same idea with a trim ring? possibly, or velcrow, but that would have something stickin somewere all the time, might look gaudy, idk

Look at this install Tim baillie did in a sunfire, where he made a faceplate out of the factory radio. https://www.hzemall.com/our_gallery/installs_misc/sunfire_dash/sunfire.htm

That's a great link and I had the same idea, except the problem is since the front of the faceplate goes out and then DOWN to open, I cannot push the deck further into the dash in order to create room to simply latch on the false plate. I have a link now to my car's dash and my dilema. As you can see by the last pic, i need something to suspend it further out and then also cover the gap.

can you make a sleave or lip to hang off that cup holder thingy, or slide in there, it doesn' thave to be really sturdy, people aren't going to inpsect it for 20 min, they are going to look and pass it up

i actually seen in a car stereo magazine, that the old factory face, was like the one in the link from above, only he actually used some kind of a hinge and something else...maybe you can use a hinge and attach it to the factory face plate and so on. you could mount it on the bottom of the face plate, and just flip it down when you need to use your aftermarket

Well if pushing it back is "impossible" why not try cutting a section out from under it. It'll take away from stock appearance, but a thief isn't gonna sit there and go "hmmm, could that little opening mean there is a present hiding inside?" they are gonna see it, think, nah, and move on...

Though I must ask, who the hell is DUMB enough to steal an ESN HU? Really, I understand people are dumb enough to buy them then realize they wasted the money, but man, you'd think word would be out... And I also understand that it doesn't stop them from tearing up your vehicle. Again, sometimes violence is worth it. IMO. And I know that is just stupid.

EDIT: Also assuming that you don't really need that little holder under your HU and have a piece to cover it. And also depends on the framing around it too I guess. Meh. Just ignore me. :)

people will still steal an esn, i think anyone dumb enough to go around stealing sh*t, probably doesn't even know about it, or look at the type, most of them just grab and go, no theives are smart, if they were, they'd have a job, a lot of times people don't even take wiring harnesses or faceplates or they leave important parts behind,
