I had thr RF rep loan me a 10" P3 to see if I wanted to sell them. I built a spec sealed box for it. At low volumes it sounded great. As so as I put power to it, it broke up badly.

Have you tried modeling it up?
In general, small sealed boxes will be less efficient, won't play as deep as a large ported, and won't be as punch ("hit").
However, they are usually smoother, more transient, and handle much more power.
If you're interested in output, I think you'd be -very- disappointed moving from a large ported to a small sealed.
