Sup guys.  I've got an SUV, and have 2 12's in a sealed box right now.  I want it to shove more, however I don't really have the money right now to buy subs and the like, so I want to upgrade the box.  I think I'd like to go with a good bandpass box which should give me more shove.  I just don't really know what to get though.  I'm looking for something really good, preferably under $150, but I can go up to $200 if I need to.  So the question is, is there a certain type of bandpass box that would work better in an SUV?  Also, anybody got a link or pics of some good ones so I can get an idea of what to look for?  Thanks fellas.

What type of subs do have? you need to know if they are compatible in a bandpass box.

Before you consider a bandpass box, you might think about a slot ported box or ported box. High output, lower power requirements, and you can retain a little sq.

A bandpass box will be loud at certain frequencies, they tend to not sound that great.

I don't know if they are compatible.  I've got the Sony Xplod's, the 5-sided ones.  They are rated at 1200 peak if that helps.  They're bout two years old.  Yeh I do want to keep some SQ.  I guess I should look at a ported box...what is the difference between a ported and a slot ported box?

what is the model # ?

If I am not mistaken those subs are really best used in a sealed box, but just to make sure, lets get the model#

What are you powering them with?

Ok where can I get the model number?  I'm powering them with an 800 watt Sony amp.

the model # usually resides on the magnet.

The sony line isn't always associated with great sound or durability. Although it should work nonetheless.

Ok, I know I'm getting old, but you want more "shove"??  What the heck is "shove"?

I assume you mean you want more SPL (louder.)  A bandpass enclosure is the best way to squeeze extra SPL out of marginal speakers.  Don't take this the wrong way I am not trying to slam you, but those pentagon-shaped Sony speakers are the definition of marginal.  It really won't matter if they are designed for BP mounting or not, if you want to try it go for it, you can't make them sound worse.  I suggest you stop by your friendly neighborhood car audio shop, tell them you are interested in a pre-fab bandpass box for your speakers and that your budget is $150, and see if they can hook you up.

Cheers!

Yes DYohn more shove is more SPL...sorry i didnt use the "correct" terminology.  And yeh  i know that my subs suck but they were all I could afford at the time.  If I would've had more money at the time then I would've bought better speakers.

If you want to try to design one yourself download WinISD (it allows you to model up subs and play around with different boxes and box sizes). WinISD (click here)

I played around with it a little with your subs in a 6th order bandpass box and it'd be louder than a sealed box definitely. I don't really have that much experience with bandpass boxes though...

Or you could go to a local shop and ask them to build one for you. They will need the T/S parameters (should be in your sub's manual).

Ya definately sell that garbage you have now and upgrade. Bandpass boxes are for cheap subs so they can sound like a real one. Sell your amp too and get a better one. And you dont need a 15" speaker to hit the lows. Try to find you a Rockford Fosgate Power HX2 and build a ported box with like 4 cubes of air space and you will be bumpin....but you would need at least a 800 watt amp. My buddy has a camaro and hes got a 500A2 pushin a Power HX2 12" in a type 3 Q-logic box and his system hits so hard its not even funny. But ya, get rid of the sony stuff and stay away from bandpass boxes.

Well i would love to do all that stuff if I had the money...I was just lookin at a bandpass box to be a cheap temporary fix until I can save up some money.

take advice from me, dont waste the $150 on trying to buy a better box for those subs. You are better off puttin that money aside, selling those subs for a decent price, waiting for the graduation money, and using all that to buy something better. I went cheap when i first bought subs and it ended up costing me more and more money trying to make the cheap stuff better. if i would have just taken all the money i kept spending being cheap and spent it all at once i would have a really nice sound system right now. I recently sold my subs and amp, bought an 8 inch woofer just to have a little extra bass and right now im saving all that money i got back from selling what i had to put it into a decent system in a new car.

yeh that sounds like a good idea.  i just wanna get somethin loud with decent SQ.  my midrange could definitely use an upgrade too, but that's not a priority right now.  I could make a couple thousand over the summer and use half of that to get somethin decent.  I'd like a couple 15s, but im not gonna hold my breath.  2 12's im sure would do just fine, but i gotta get a better amp.  the problem is, i got that third-row seat in the back that folds down so i just sit my subs on top of it.  ive got the amp mounted under one of the middle-row seats so it is out of the way, but if i got a better amp it would definitely be bigger and i'd have to mount it on the box probably.  then i would have to mess with disconnecting the amp every time i wanted to get the box out and take that third-row seat up

sell the stuff, u did say a suv right? so for spl u got some air to move and interior space to fill, save some money and buy 2 decent 15's (soundstream vahn goh series about 119 bucks apeice and sound better than he2's or w3's) team that to a 7 cu.ft box with around a .70 port and a good amp (power acoustik 1200.2 buy em all day long for 129, and to all you haters they do the numbers and I can prove it) and you have some serious bump, should push to atleast 142 in a suv (did a expedition and thats what he did)

with no sq, no cargo area, and a trip to the warranty location regularly? Sounds very logical, irregardless of numbers.
