1990 Toyota Camry Front Speakers?

Has anyone ever removed the front speakers in a 1990 toyota camry sedan? The speakers are at knee-level in the dash, behind some serious looking steel plates. I've removed the grille cover and there is no way to get to that speaker that I can see. Maybe if I take off the bottom of the dash under the steering wheel but I'm not going to go thru all of that on a hunch. Can anyone help?

You are correct sir!! (that's my bad ed mcmahon impression)
You have to take off the steel panel under the dash on the driver's side and remove the glove box on the passenger side. The speakers are in a passive radiator style enclosure. 3 1/2's will fit in there perfectly.

Thanks! How much do u think a shop would charge in labor hours to do this? Like, is it a very tough job or something a dyi-er could do? i've done installs before but i dont want to tear apart the dash just to find some other obstacle keeping me from getting the stock 3.5"ers out. What does the passive radiator do exactly?

Depends on the shop. My sister has an 88 camry with those dash speakers in it. Took me about and hour to swap em first time i took the dash apart. Just make sure you pull out the blank panels to the right or the dimmer knob on the lower left side by the steering wheel (there a bolt behind it) and the drivers side is a snap. It's more cumbersome than hard. I think the passive radistor is supposed to get the front fuller sound (but the's just a guess). I ended up doing fosgate 3.5 and tweeters in the door panels to give the front a better sound. With out the tweeters the front stage sounded like it was playing to your feet.
