Subject: Will a JL 250/1 run an 12 idmax
Date Posted: May 10, 2005 at 6:57 PM

I just purchased a new truck and I can't get rid of this stock set-up fast enough. In my last system I ran 2 10's with my jL 250/1 and it sounded great. I am looking to get a box made for an idmax 12 and would like to use this amp. How will it sound?? Could I run the voice coils at 4 ohm and have it wired in parallel at 2 ohms to equal 500 watts .Would like some info. If I need to purchase another amp to run this, then I will probably purchase a jl 1000/1 and then have the box made for two idmax 12's. The 1000/1 should push the two 12's with ease yes... Thanks in advance for the tips.

not real familiar with jl. depends on the amp specs as far as power rating at 2 ohm. as far as the sound of the sub goes - what kind of box (sealed or ported)? what does the sub recommend? what is the box tuned at?

Well the box will be sealed and it is not yet built so not sure I understand (tuned at). There are idmax 2 subs, one in 2 ohm that is rared as (High SPL Ultra Long Excursion 12-inch Dual 2 Ohms • Sealed Box: 1.30 - 1.52 cu.ft • Ported Box: 1.80 - 2.50 cu.ft • Free Air Usage • Frequency Response: 10-150 Hz • RMS - 1000W  Peak Power Handling: 1800W ) and a 4 ohm that is rated as (High SPL Ultra Long Excursion 12-inch Dual 4 Ohms • Sealed Box: 1.30 - 1.52 cu.ft • Ported Box: 1.80 - 2.50 cu.ft • Free Air Usage • Frequency Response: 10-150 Hz • RMS - 1000W  Peak Power Handling: 1800W . The amp's specs are
Rated Power:
250 W RMS @ 1.5 ohm-4 ohm (11V-14.5V)

 THD at Rated Power:
<0.05% @ 4 ohm

 S/N Ratio*:
>95dB below rated power

 Frequency Response:
5 Hz - 500 Hz (+0, -1dB)

 Damping Factor:
>500 @ 4 ohm/50 Hz

 Input Range:
switchable from 200mV-2V RMS
to 800mV-8V RMS
Thanks for looking

If you build the box ported the amp you currently have will be pretty loud actually, i have heard a 12" idmax in my Pathfinder with a high quality ported box off of 300 watts rms and it hit harder than most dual 12 set ups.  In the future you will gain some more volume with a 1000 watt amp if it is not enough.

My box will have to be sealed because of the space it is going in. Should I run it the way I mentioned above? Thanks,

Give it a try, if its not loud enough for you then get your hands on a 1000 watt amp to put to that 1 sub.

Will it matter if I get a 2 ohm or 4 ohms sub? My amp is rated 250 W RMS @ 1.5 ohm-4 ohm (11V-14.5V). I have done some research and still can not seem to understand ohms. What would be the best way to run this amp? What I mentioned above was what I have only heard, not sure if it would make a difference. Thanks,

That JL250 will not push that sub too hard.  I have a JL250 on a Crystal CMP-10 and it barely works it.

Do it right the first time

Whell, if you only plan on running 1 sub in the future get the dual 4 ohm model, if you may, but don't know yet run 2 subs in the future, then get the dual 2 ohm model.  Either model you get the amp you have will put out the 250 watts rms, but in the future if you want to add another id max you will need 2 dual 2 ohm models.

Thanks for the info! If I run the 4 ohm sub/amp combo, is it true that it will run/sound  cleaner than running a 2 ohm sub/amp combo?
