i am looking for a head unit for my 90 integra and i was originally leaning towards an alpine 9847, but from what i hear the 9833 has better onboard amps, and more adjustablity with the eq. i am tight on cash but if it would be worth it in the long run i dont have a problem spending a hundred more. also right now i have 2 pairs of pioneer 3-way 6 1/2s that i got new for 30 a pair, but i plan to replace the fronts with components and add a single dd 2512 or 3512 this summer after i repaint.

Eclipse is where the smart person looks for a good cd player, consider the line. Buy it for how it affects your systems ability to recreate sound, not how it looks in the dash. It will not dissappoint you.

The HU is the most important part of the system. Consider it the "brain" of your system. In order for everything else to sound good you wanna go with a clear head unit. Eclipse, nakamichi, and high end alpine units are what you want.

The Eclipse 5425 would be perfect. It blows away the 9847 and 9833 in almost every catagorey, and it retails for around $220.

Ya, I wont hesitate to suggest that eclipse deck over any similar priced alpine deck any day of the week, but I will suggest many things before I suggest an alpine head unit, but thats because of personal opinion not due to breakdown rates and what not.

thanks for the replies. hopefully i can find a eclipse dealer nearby (shouldnt be too hard in houston) and get a chance to listen to them in person. also is there much of a difference between the 5425 and the 5435 besides the remote being included with the 5435?

Just to emphasize what these guys are saying...

I had an Alpine CDA-7894. It got stolen and I decided to go with the Eclipse 8454. The difference in sound is incredible.  I do agree that the looks of the Eclipse HU's is not very attractive but you don't see your sound, you hear it, and Eclipse is the winner there.

Actually the older Eclipse lines didn't have that attractive of an appeal. The new lines released this year are much more aesthetic, atleast to me. I don't like the lower end look(8425 for example looks like old crap to me) but the 35,45,55 all look very nice. I personally like the 35 for the user that won't want a lot of interaction with the adjustments of their music really, atleast not through the HU. But I'd personally go with the 45. Higher preout(Whoppity do at that point, but meh) and it just seems to have a little bit more versatility in the EQ which I like. I also have gotten to tampering with an external EQ yet either. :) Needless to say I have the 8454, and really, I found that the look of it really looked good in my car. I didn't like it outside of it, but inside, the basic BLACK/ aluminum scheme matched well.

The 5435 has the remote, plays WMA files, has a input for Ipods, Sirius, etc. and you can change the color of the illumination.

i got around to finding an eclipse dealer which happened to be car toys btw, and they did not have the 5445 in stock, but wanted 260 for the 5425. is that a decent price figuring i still need a harness and mounting kit, or should i look elsewhere. if the second, can anyone suggest a decent shop in north houston area?

Nakamichi CD-400... if you know where to look under $300 shipped

"I don't play games. I play Nakamichi and that for real yo" - Probably some japanese kid said this in the early 80's trying to sell stereo out of his trunk lol.

For the average car audio customer I will suggest the Eclipse stuff before the Nak, based on the fact that it has apealing features and maintains good sound quality. The Nak deck sounds good but they are a harder sell now adays based on their limited feature set. Also the Nak have their issues with skipping and this is an area where the Eclipse stuff accels
