i belive the big 3 was actually , (1)power wire from alt to batt, (2) ground from alt to chassis (3) batt to chassis.
I copied that from my search, and there are a few links that go into great detail.

I have also heard that the big 3 is; HO alt., deep cycle battery (ie. Yellow Top) and the bigger power/ground wires as mentioned above. I have also heard it is only the wires as dwarren said. Perhaps someone could clear this up for me once and for all.

if you can't click it, go to sounddooman.com, goto the form section, click on Electrical Explanations, its the 3rd. question down.. it will give you clear colorful pics. it should answer all your questions.
