focal tweeters sounding tinny

Hope someone can give me direction, I've got the Focal 165K2P speakers, I'm using the surface mount in the "A" pillar. They sound too tinny, I've adjusted the crossovers to reduce by 7db, but still sounds tinny.

They're powered by a Phoenix Gold Ti500.4, I've got MB Quarts 218.61's in the rear, also a 500.1 amp powering my Diamond Audio 12" sub.

Would it help much if I was to flush mount them? Any other ideas?

Nothing will fix the tinny sound you are referring to, it is inherent in ALL metal dome tweeters. With a high dollar TRUE parametric EQ, you can make them sound listenable, but a good set of silk domes will serve you MUCH better...

Here's another question... My driver side tweeter (mounted in the "A" pillar is pointing at the driver, should I be directing the driver side tweeter at the passenger instead?

The instruction manual that comes with Focal speakers provides a diagram showing optimal speaker imaging/direction they should be installed. The Focal mids and highs are the most award winning SQ speakers on the market. With the correct tuning you wont find a better speaker system.

The instructions for the 165 k2p show preferred placement, but not directional recommendations. They also "highly recommend" flush mounting, but not sure why. They don't tell where to point the tweeter once mounted, i.e. should driver side "A" pillar mounted tweeter point to the driver or passenger.

Give it some time, I was in the same boat as you. My tweeters were and are mounted up high, and too far from the mid bass. At first I was really disappointed and wanted to swap them out for soft domes but waited for a while and either I simply got used to the sound or they broke in so to speak ( I don't really know if that is possible though). It just takes a certain taste to like hard domes, don't let peoples opionions sway you from your likes or dislikes.

If at all possible, relocate the tweeters down low, preferably near the mid bass. EQing may help, but will not fix it enirely.

As for your question in regards to aiming the tweeter, your best bet is to try and expirement with it. The rules of such and such are great but trying different things that appeal to you is the best, since you are the real critic!

Thanks Dwarren, just curious, which direction does your driver side tweeter point?

It doesn't actually point at me directly, it follows the contour of the door, so it looks like it might run past the front of my face if you can visualize that. The passenger side tweeter is more or less pointed at me which i like because it is further away from my ear(s).

Flush mount your tweeters for aesthetics, and this will limit damage from something knocking them off the mount.

I am running a set of Diamond Audio M661A's that have aluminum tweeters. I used some velcro to flush mount them in different places till I achieved the imaging that I was looking for. They are metal dome tweeters but as mentioned above, utilizing EQ setings can help get rid of the tinny sound. MIne, to me, actually sound very good now that I have all of me EQ settings down right.

Also, depending on the head unit you have (mine is a Alpine CDA-9833), there may be more adjustments that you can make such as time correction. I love the time correction on this Alpine as it allowed me to set timing between the passanger and drivers side so that the the sound from both the tweeter and midwoofer where not overwhelming on my side of the car.

Before you go blowing cash on a new set of tweeters, try waht we have mentioned here with the palcement of the tweeters and EQ settings. You may find that they don't sound as bad as you think they do.
