This thread is aimed at determining the negative effects of only hooking up these three wire to my HU. i have a short somewhere in my ride and it has, I am ashamed to admit, become something of a hack job (three different shops in two cities, some friends with more zeal than skill, and my own slowly learning hands touching things) so I want strip all the audio related wires and then take my 12+ from the batt, fused of course, and go to the HU.

My hu, a clarion drx9575z has an eight wire harness, but aside from the hot constant, switched and ground, do I need any of the others?

I am going to also have my eq and sirius hooked up the same way, but they only ask for the three. any thoughts

Normally the HU will have two hots, one constant and one accesory, and one negative. Sometimes it will have a dedicated ground wire, but I've seen a few HUs that use the chassis as the ground.

You can hook it up with just those three wires...It will only power on....Make sure the other wires dont touch one another though....Tape them up...It wont hurt the unit at all...You can get you ACC power from the ignition harness....And ground is pretty self explanitory..

Also, if you want it to power on with the ignition you'll need to put a relay on one of the switched wires and then connect it to the battery and HU. That'll turn it on off with the Ignition without overloading the stock wiring.

Note that the stock wiring is ~18 or 20 awg in most vehicles. This usually isn't enough to even power a Head Unit.

or go to the ignition harness like previously stated.

Like I said, the ignition harness wire is a little small to be running an aftermarket deck on.

NOpe. Most wires in the ignition controlled harness are only 18 or 20 awg wire. What you're probably thinking of is the larger wire that comes AFTER the ignition relay which controls the starter

The ignition harness is the group of wires coming out of the key cylinder. Most vehicles  these wires can take 40 - 50 amps of current. there are very few vehicles that can't take that much. the smallest i've ever seen has been 20 amps. and even then you're still ok for a deck.
