hi guys..this is my first post here..i have been hanging around this forum for quite some time pickin up tips and tricks along the way but never posted anything until now...
Here is my question....i would appreciate everyone's opinion on the pro vs cons on gettin a ported versus a sealed enclosure for a pair of orion H2 12 at 2 ohm each. THese will be powered by one directed 2400d mono amp (let me know if one is enough to handle both subs) . My aim is more toward SQ over SPL so with that in mind shoot me your honest opinion. Oh before i forget , these are going in a ford conversion van behind the fold down rear seat. the space i have there is approximately 40 inches wide by 12inches tall by 18 inches deep...
Here is a rundown of the setup i got going so far.I have taken the time and expense of already upgrading to a 250 amp HO alternator from iraggi along with runing two optima yellow top fused with two 250 amp anl fuse . My power wire and alternator wire is 0 awg all the to the fused distibution block. From the dist block i run a 0 gauge to the 2400d and a 4 to the PG xenon. I got a Pioneer AVX-P7300cd with the matching hide away master unit, dvd and tuner. For my mid/highs i got a PHOENIX GOLD XENON X100.4 amp powering 6 POLK AUDIO MOMO MMC570 .
Thanks in advance for all your input....MJ

If you are going for Mainly SQ I would stick with a sealed box, although a properly BUILT ported box can usually have a good sound for avarage use.   Honestly I almost always use ported boxes, but we are running in a trunk not a open area like a van. I would check with some local shops, or decide if you are willing to build your own box, if so..then I would start asking oponions for a box design.   I will try to get to deawing something today, it would be great if you could post all the Thiel/small paremeters up for us

For anyone (Jeff) who wants to look at T/S parameters or other info quickly, here is a list of car audio manufacturers:

https://www.ht-audio.com/audio.htm#Driver%20Manufacturers

I keep that in the favorites and can usually find info in about 5 seconds.  Here is the page that lists the parameters for this sub:

https://www.orioncaraudio.com/subwoofers/sub_H2_series.asp#

Looking under the column "H2 12.2"...Fs is 30.54 and Qes is 0.62.  So dividing Fs by Qes gives us an EBP of 49, which is begging to go into a sealed enclosure.  Along with that, a check on the Qts shows that it is on the high side at .58 and that confirms it.

*Wait*...let's look at this again.  You said "at 2 ohms each", so you must have the DVC 4 ohm models.  Correct?  In that case, the EBP is 51, which is borderline sealed or vented.

I agree with Jeff on his initial impression.  SQ, in a van, and other quality components around it....I'd work up the perfect sealed enclosure if it were me.  In fact, that's a very pretty behind on that sub

....so I believe I would also try to find a way to show it off!  Now where was that post about a part plexi - part MDF box?  (Sure beats the hell out of the old days when the best thing you could do for a van was to put in shag carpet...)

On the other hand, one amp will not provide the power you want for SQ with two of these.  It's bad enough that you're running a Directed at 1 ohm and are looking for SQ....so, with that said, you will need two of those amps to power these and it still doesn't look like enough.  I see 600 watts to each whether it's a 1 ohm load or a 2 ohm load, according to the CEA chart listings on https://www.directed.com/audio/amps/default.asp#digital.  Orion says that for SQ you should power at between the RMS and peak ratings....between 2000 and 2500 watts per sub...

...which points now to using a ported setup to enhance decibel-to-power ratio.

Build the box so that it performs well in the worst case scenario and, in return, it will reward you at all times.

Personally, I wouldn't buy H2's for an SQ install, but if I were to buy one I would definitely go ported. Those things handle some power, but aren't the most stable subs. I like what Jeff said about ported enclosures. With the *proper design* you can get good SQ and still be loud. SQL if you will. Many people that say ported boxes tend to be peaky and boomy probably didn't buld a proper box in the first place. Low tuned boxes are very sweet IMO and can please the majority of people.

regarding the D2400, i looked at the site u referred me to i feel is describing the new model 2400d. I say that since it also says that the amp stable at 1 ohm but mine states it's stable at 2 ohm....
Thank u all for the input.....i got no problem gettin another 2400D in the mix..i have already spent this much loot on the system..so i might as well dump a few more dollars into in....
Regarding "showing it off" guys...u all make me roll over laughing .....I live near chicago and go there to hang out most of the time...now i don't know bout u guys but if i have a "radio" in my car i am scared of "showing it off" in chicago.....I have gotton my stuff ripped off so many times that's why i got an plain jane van and plan to keep it that way......thanks a lot...MJ
