i have the following set-up- 3 mtx 9515-04 woofers running at a 1.33 ohm load 1 hk4000d amplifer (supposedly factory modified as i bought it from someone who used to be sponsored by them) i also have about 20 other speakers, 2,000 watts for the rest of them, 5.1 surround, and 17", 23", three 6", and a 7" touchscreen, an airbag system (compressor etc) in my vehicle that are all running off of my charging system- it has been upgraded and i run a iraggi 280 amp alternator and 7 svr 80-12 batteries. I really don't think this problem is on the current side of things. so here goes- my amp cuts off (into protection) when i turn it up past a certain point. not every time i do so, but 1 in 3 or 4 times i do so. sometimes i can turn it on and play it as loud as i want for as long as i want with no problems and other times it will shut off the first time i get it turned up at all... i have trouble shot it by rewiring the remote wire so that i now know it is getting plenty of voltage there, and i have repeatedly checked ground, and power to be certain, i have also ruled out heat as the main source of the problem because it will do this when the amp is simply not hot at all (in fact not even warmed up). however, it does seem to usually be at its best the first time i turn it on after a long time of letting it sit. what else could be tripping my amp into protection? please help. this is driving me crazy

How good are the grounds from your batterys to the body? Does the amp shut off when your voltage is high, low, or does it do it randomly? Have you measured your final resistance the amp is seeing from the subs, some companys claim 4 ohm but really are 3.2 ohm for example. my amp is grounded directly to the frame. i have mobile spec sponsorship and no "expense" was spared in wiring etc. have not measured final resistance- how can it be related to that when it will work properly at some tiems but not others? as i can tell the amp goes into protection when the input voltage is anywhere in its range.

what are the possible reasons for any amp to go into protection? heat, instability at that resistance, what else? this is somethign i should know

What Alpine Guy asked was did you redo the factory ground between the chassis and the battery not the amp to the chassis.
As to causes, it could be a speaker gone bad, bad ground/too much resistance, bad amp and a number of other things.

ah, sorry. batteries to the ground are the same location on the frame as the amp's ground. everything is grounded well.

so i'd love to hear anyones ideas for what to check like i said i've concentrated on heat, and low voltage (power and remote) since those are the things i can think of that it could be.

I would start testing piece by piece. Do you have acess to another vehicle to test this amp in? Also try running a volt meter on your pos, and remote lines. watch voltage on there and try to get it to trip off. possible regound, this amp has 0 guage pos and neg correct? is 0guage being ran for ground?

it does have 0 gauge power and ground. i will use a voltmeter to test things

You might have a blown sub. If you have a box with out separaters all of the subs would move as if they are working but if the blown one pops on every now and than your system would shut down. Check your subs, if they all show as being good, try pushing on the cone and seeing the they show the coil as shorting out during the movement phase.
