most head units "Sound the same"   actually they dont make sound at all, the speakers make sound But I know what you are getting at.     Untill you get into high end decks like eclipse and alpine, there is really not much of a noticable diffrence.
There sometimes is a diffrence between the $100 kenwood and the $500 decks,     you get what you pay for.   I am not a fan of either one do to the user interface on most of them, I am happy with panasonic,   alot easier to use, and most have very nice built in 7 band eq's

Kenwood makes a pretty good HU, not up to par with Alpine, Eclipse and Pioneer, but a step up from JVC, Sony, etc.
Im not sure how true Kenwood is with their specs though, they have a deck that supposedly puts out 5V at a local shop for a little over $200, I really doubt it actually puts out 5V.

MP828. retail. near 399. 5v output @ 80ohms resistance.

Technically sounds good. dealer cost on the unit is in the 200 dollar range. maybe if they were clearancing it off. but the normal store should list the 5v unit @ 300-500 depending on excelon vs. standard.

I just got my first kenwood the 828 the other day for fun. sounds pretty good, tons of features, dual zone (front and rear) good strong outputs (Which we'll get to test when i add the amps soon). but overall, tons of features even at 399.

you can't go wrong with a 2005 model kenwood excelon, good features, superior sound for the price, good new look without that crappy 3d mask.

What you want is a Kenwood Kdc-X589 - $160 shipped-

All I would have to say is 24bit BurrBrown DACs (high end digital to analog onverters usually found in Eclipse, Denon, ClarionPRO top of the line head units, it makes a tremendous difference in sound quality from CDs).

The rest of the specs. 4 volt out, 3 band EQ (ask around the difference between 3 band and 7 band is not that noticeable unless your at World Finals SQ competition at IASCA or something).  I see people always picking the 3band as a deciding factor but in reality it's not.

I'm personally getting this HU myself.
