I'm about to install an in-dash DVD/Mp3/CD/AM-FM player , no monitor, into a friend's 2004 Cavalier.  There's no On-Star either.  Does anyone know how to remove the head unit from the dash and I've been reading around about these special adaprters needed in such. Do I need one?

yes you need the adapter there is an adapter for the ant. and there is a wire harrness that will clip into the factory clip that is hooked up to the factory headunit the wire harness that you can buy at bestbuy or any audio shop will be color coded to match the aftermarket headunit  as far as getting the factory head unit out if it is the same or similar to a 97 cavalier its 2 screws and the plate that needs to be removed is held on by clips you will need to pull the plate of  and remove the head unit install the mounting kit  hookup the wire harness to th new head unit then plug in the harness to the factory clip

Not quite accurate. Actually the entire top dash must come off. Look for screws hidden behind pop off panels at either end, above the instrument cluster, in the top center vent and way up inside the glove box.. After that panel is removed, then you can start to remove the panel around the radio next and finally remove the radio itself.

This vehicle uses a CLASS II databus system and MUST use the radio relocation harness or the data retention harness. It is ILLEGAL to not use one of these two harnesses as it is ILLEGAL to remove a safety device from a vehicle. The safety device is question is the seatbelt reminder.

i know circuit city has the right parts you need for this install only problem is the relocation harness is about 50 dollars and you have to have your factory radio in the tunk and the retention harness cost 89.99 now. if you dont use one of the 2 harness there is a chance of bad thing could happen to cars like abs or airbag not working

cavaliers are a pain in the ass you need to remove the top deck and the dash panel just to change the radio
you will also need a gmrc harness

Can't you just find the seatbelt wires and power the stereo, hide it under a seat or something, then run new power and speaker wires for the new stereo?

I know it seems like a lot of work, but $50...that can buy a lot of wire and solder!
