need to know how to install a new radio in the 1990 mercedes 300se. there is an amp in the trunk and a separate fader switch in the center console. ive been told that if wired wrong i can burn out the factory amp. i need to re wire the whole system. all types of things. i would like to bypass the factory amp  and let the new radio power the speakers. is there a bypass swicth or plug . anyone done an install like this before please help. a simple new radio install made difficult thanks to benz.

Actually there are 2 amps. They are located on the left rear wheel well. One is for the right front AND rear speakers and one is for the left side. Then there is also a preamp tuner, you'll recognize this by the antenna plug. Don't try to use any of these, run new speaker wires from this point to your amp or head unit. If I remember right the speaker leads are gray, gray/black and black, black yellow and they should be together on the plug. You will also need to run an antenna lead to the front. Lastly if you plan to use the factory dash speakers they are crossed over in the stock amp so they will need caps.

Hey Swav, I told you marcedes are a pain and you had to run new wires.. You have to love jap cars for after market radio installs.

uh... Mercedes is a European car, and depending on what system is in the vehicle you can wire around the tuner and still use the factory amplifier.

so i have to run new speaker wires from the back speakers to the head unit in front. and new speaker wires from the front speakers to the head unit. this sucks. the radio costs $170 and the install job is going to be $300.

Don't run them from the speakers, access them at the amps. Run your wires from the trunk to the head unit. A decent shop that knows the car shouldn't charge you more then $150 parts and labor.

Hey jstruckman I was not not saying Mercedes are Jap,, I was stating that Jap cars are easy to work on compared to mercedes.. Maybe I made it sound dumb in my forst post.. And yes go to the factory amp for the speaker wires its the quickest route, rather than runnin to the speakers.
