I got some Rockford Fosgate amps really cheap from Best Buy. I used to have PPI  Art series which I loved. I know PPI is better than Fosgate , but how do the Fosgates match up? Are the Fosgates better for SQ or SPL. I have a Punch 500s and a Punch 500x.

Thanks in advance,

SPL, and not even really good for that. I don't like to beat on RF amps, as they tend to eat their own power supplies when you do... I can't think of even ONE RF amp that could ever be considered a good SQ amp... Just my opinion tho...

Why did you - why WOULD you - switch to RF from Art series?

It all reminds me of something that Molière once said to Guy de Maupassant at a café in Vienna: "That's nice. You should write it down."

Enh, RF's not that bad. But you could definately get better gear for your money.

Now some of their older stuff, that's descent stuff, but no where near as good as some Art series amps.

Basically the car I had my PPI amps in got stolen, had 10 speakers in the car plus 2 SAS bazooka tubes.(Pissed as hell), but I got the Rockford amps at about half price or less than half price(used to work at Best Buy).

RF amps, as much as i hate to say it, are actualy very good. SQ wise they have potential, but SPL wise they can put some DAMN crazy power out. On termpro, somebody bought a 3000x1 RF amp and the birthsheet gives high 3900's!!! So they can put out a ton of power with ease... if you want SQ there are other amps to go with, but if you got a good deal, then why bother? Im sure you will be happy with it.

The reason why these amps seem to go through power supplies is simple. Resistance on the ground return. Took me blowing a 1000a2 4 times to figure this out.

As in your install had grounding problems, or the amp(s) had bad grounds internaly?

As in the days before I started to actaully check return resistance and relied on the assumed correct method of grounding, which was to a nice big bolt, clean and no paint. After 4 blown amps in as many days, Rockford asked me to check the return resistance which was 26 ohms.... OMG. At lower volume levels all is well but at higher volume levels with higher current draw, this became a nightmare that led to the power supply doing the crispy critter.

dang man, thats some scary resistance! glad you got that fixed.. I blew 3 HiFonics amps in a row due to a fuse not holding tight enough at my fused dis block, as the bass made the fuse vibrate rapidly, giving and killing power very quickly. This was in my newb days, too.

you know the really funny thing is the ground isn't the return, it's the source....haha

Speaking of which, I'm gonna go buy a wire brush to clean off my ground return some more. Mine is pretty bad!!
