How should i do a motorized sealable box?

Hey guys!

I am trying to think of the best way to do an electronic motorized seal for some ports im considering adding to my box... due to space restraint, ill have to go with 4 1.5" PVC ports per side (yeah i know, its scary buy my ONLY option without reduing 100+ hours of work). Basicly ill have them come out the 2 sides of my box, and on the ends ill make MDF roundover areas so its smooth and flows like the river. On the ends, i want to put some type of "door" that can close or open at the flick of a switch to go from ported or sealed, so i can do SQ in sealed and open up 45Hz tuned ports to hit my cars peak during SPL compitition.

There are many types of motors but i dont know what will be strong enough to hold say up to 8 hours strait to keep it sealed! Actuator? Trunk release magnetic systems (what are these called?) Servo?

Another idea i had was to use these motors and have a latching system, so the motor didnt have to be on but to open or close the port system... just have one pull the door shut and the latch hold it closed, then have another motor that will pull the latch and springs will open the door up.

Any ideas would be GREAT!

the trunk release is a solenoid (same as the solenoid used for the shaved door handles).

If constant current is applied door actuators they hold their position pretty strong (like with a switch).

I'll test my new Audiovox door actuators today and let you know how strong the hold.

(got 4 for $20 shipped last week).  They got a strong pull/throw I can tell you that.

Good deal! Where did you get them? And do you think they will keep at least an 8 hour hold constantly?

It sounds like you want to create a system like SVS home subwoofer enclosures have.

I'll test it for you to see if it can do a few hrs.

I'll see if it can hold a 1QT/1 liter bottle of water suing a 12 volt source.

I got them from e-bay brand new.  They are door actuators.

Damn that would be great! Test those suckers and see how good they really are! :D

SVS does this eh? Any schematic on their design by chance?

SVS does it, but you have to manually change the port plugs. You can lower/raise the tuning frequency depending on how much/many of the ports you block off.
