What is the deal with factory reconditioned amps?  Is this something to stay away from?

If not is there a good site you could recommend that carries factory reconditioned stuff?

Buy from a company that deals in factory merchanise backed by warranties... this amp would be perfect for you.

https://www.cardomain.com/item/JBLPX3004Z

Anything at all from sounddomain.com or thezeb.com is all factory authorized and warrantied.. if ya have a problem, they'll work with ya eh?

Factory renewed stuff is really like buying open-box stuff or anyother reconditioned type of gear.. if you're cool with the idea that someone owned it before and it was fixed... then by all means.

Personnaly I'd get that stuff in a heartbeat.

Would I buy something that has had the snot beat out of it, maybe caught on fire, was sent in 5 times for service and then fixed improperly each time and finally sold as a refurb.... no thanks. Imagine if the guy selling this stuff sold it as new...... and it happens way too often as well.

?

From Sounddomain.com:

"This is a special purchase on a factory renewed amplifier from JBL. Tested and certified by JBL, this amplifier includes all original accessories (except for birth sheet), features a 1-year factory warranty, and includes CarDomain's 30-day Satisfaction Guarantee. Some models may have slight cosmetic blemishes. Hurry, supplies are limited!"

Come on forbidden, Harmon Kardon makes good gear, and its a big company. How could ya not trust that amp with a warranty from an authorized dealer? I betcha a company with a rep like sounddomain even FedEx ya a new one before they get the old one back if it arrived DOA.

Maybe caught fire? ROFL.

Well, after being in the industry 20 years almost and seeing more than the average bear's worth of refurb equipment, to me I steer entirely clear of it now. I just sent a great Eclipse CD5423 back for the 5th time for the same issue that I saw with my own eyes. I tested it in the board and the customers car and had the same results, yet the service shop could not find the flaw, now this unit will be sold as a refurb, tested and certified.

Lots of companies make good gear, yet no company is immune to failures and failure upon failure as well. It is all about how reputable the dealer is that you are buying the refurb from and how they will honour warranty on it. IF you are buyuing from Sounddomain etc, chances are that the warranty will be dealt with properly etc, but if you are buying from some dude on line (Trailer Park Timmy's Discount Audio Sleazemart), will the warranty be the same or are you on your own. It all comes back to one thing, buyer beware.......

I have had a amp about 12 years back that had caught fire, was repaired and sold as a refurb. This happened at the big box retailer that I used to work for. I have seen subs with mismatched dustcaps and cones, yet the baskets are the same. I have seen cd players with differing faceplates to the chassis model #, I have seen the same models with different amplifier stages. Basically, I have seen my share and know enough to stay away as it does nothing except create headaches for me when warranty time comes. This is time that I could be spending with a customer installing his equipment or gaining new business instead of saying to a customer, I told you so.... Is all refurb equipment bad, no, will I sell it here, no. To each his own. There is nothing worse than selling a customer a refurb only to have it die and there are no more refurbs available to sell him and now the unit is gone for service after one week of use. It's gone for a week, maybe a month, maybe two. As I dealer I have to look after the customer, this means that I am now giving him a new unit, A stock, that I am now losing money on.... not the way to run a business profitably, but a way to ensure that a customer gets looked after. I will always look after my customer the best I can, but I will not sacrifice my business's ability to remain profitable at the same time. So I say no to refurds!

Well I guess considering I can get either a bazooka or a us acoustics 2 channel amp for $80 I will buy new rather than take a chance.  Espeically since this will be my first install, I don't need any additional trouble shooting for possible defective equipment.  I'm using it to power components or two way coaxials so I don't need a 1000 watt unit.

thanks for the input

Different amp stages??? Really?
Like the amp fell apart and they put it back together using parts from the wrong amp?

Haha!

Perhaps the best way for me to put it is.. sounddomain is aight.. I'd trust whatever I order from them...

But like you say... Have you ever been to refurbdepot.com?

There are very few manufacturers that I would buy refurb. They must have warranty and I must also know the companies repair process(whether they repair the problem or replace the whole board). They also happen to be located in my city.

Also Rob, dyohn is right. You should get the name right. Also include thier location, swapmeet.

I will get Kicker Refurbed items.   They are tested to the normal operations and then tested past specs to ensure quality.   I also have a Guy who does repairs for me, he offers a 6 month warranty with all his repairs and I have never had an amp break after he repaired it yet!   Now there is an exception to that...We run many competitions and at some shows we run our 1 ohm stable amps strapped so each amp see's .25 ohm.    yes we have burnt a few up, but when you running at .25 instead of 2 ohm strapped something is gonna go wrong.   But he has a competitor pricing, where you pay an initial price, then $45 each time it is blown up.     Great deal in my opionion.    Or maybe we should quit cooking amps

I had three of the world famous Alpine " Boeing " amps, model T-757 amps catch fire in my showroom. All three refurbs I got back smelled like smoke. If you can't trust Alpine, don't buy a refurb.

I have a factory refurbed JBL 600.1 from sounddomain and ive never had a problem with it. My friend has a refurbed Kenwood amp from a shop and it hasnt casued him any problems. Many factory refurbed items go through more rigirous testing then new products do.
