hey i have a 6 1/2 component set. audiobahn abc6003q. two 6 1/2, two 4s, and two tweeters. they are i think 360 watts rms or about that. i am running a crappy pioneer GM-4000F, 4 channel 300 watts. i get distortion in speakers cause the amp isnt powerful enough. i dont understand howmuch power i need in an amp for these speakers. this is my guess, a 1000 watt 4 channel amp, 250x4 output. sound good? or am i wrong?

I see, that may be your problem. Do you know how to set your gains?

You are going to blow your speakers real soon. That amp should be fine for those speakers. Try this first and then decide if you want to upgrade your amp.

www.bcae1.com look to the left and select #63 "setting gains"

i had that same amp at one point. the gain should be substantially lower than full. i have a Premier deck so the preouts were high, but i still didnt go much past 15% with the gain on a not so great set of pioneer 4x6s and i never really got any distortion. either way if you crank the gain on that amp you will soon cook the speakers, because it isnt a very high wattage. that 300W is peak if i am not mistaken, so you'll just be clipping real bad

so if im understanding this right. you should set your gain at approximately whatever voltage your deck puts out... if its puts out 4.5 volts then set the gain at 4.5 volts on the amp correct?

I do not think you are going to blow your speakers by under powering them. You will blow them with your gain set all the way up.

yeah, you are typically supposed to set it to your voltage, but i have yet to find an output voltage that is exactly what it claims to be. my premier claims to be 6.5v out, but i have to raise the gain slightly for optimum performance. typically people say set the deck to 70% volume and play with the gain until you get loud but not distorted audio.
