I can get a much better price on JL w3 rated at 6 ohms that at 4 or 2.

My question is, since w3s are dual voice coil, by hooking the subs coils up in parallel, I would actually be able to operate at 3 ohms, and not be loosing power, correct?  Any reason I should avoid doing this?

should have been "not loose much power" would be operating 1 ohm higher than 4 ohm dual voice in parallel.

Are you using one sub...and with what type of amp (two channel, mono)?

JL 300/4..........3 ohm stable bridged.  Thinking about 1 sub for now.

OK...150 watts looks like the optimum power to give that sub (W3v2).  That amp will produce the same power whether the impedance load is 3 ohms or any number up to and including 8 ohms, so you'll do well to get your good deal on the sub.  Use two channels bridged for the sub and the other two channels for your mains.
