I posted this a while back but the thread is buried....I'm looking to upgrade my kappa's to components in my Explorer. I want a good 6.5 component set in the $200-$300 price range, and I would be looking for at least 100wrms and soft dome tweeters. Does JL make good components? CDT? Rainbow? Boston? Lots of choices but I most likely won't be able to audition them since there isn't a whole lot of choice locally for me. Recommendations would be appreciated.

I used to have the Boston's (Rally) they don't make them anymore (they were $300). I was not impressed. The new Atlas (check sig) comps. I have sound a lot better (richer tone, better midbass) on the same amp/setup. Rainbow is definetley the winner here, floowed by CDT-EF61. Diamond Audio makes a nice set (not the HEX) the D651 for $150-200. The Atlases I have sound a tad bit better then the CDTs IMO (myabe I'm a bit biased but they really sound amazing). ------------- (1) Kenwood Excelon Head Unit KDC-X589 (24 bit Burr Brown DAC, 3 X 4 volt RCA).

i have read some good reviews on the kappa components, i might consider getting a couple sets, i hear a lot of good things about rainbow, not to familiar with them though, i have also heard of jl audio making a good set, not sure which model though. if u can find some focal components and are in ur range, id buy them.

Can anyone chime in on which models of JL might be good? Or Rainbow for that matter. I've never considered hifonics speakers before. Might be worth consideration. ------------- 2004 BMW 325ci.

The D651s are 5.25", they make a 6.5" too though, D661s, which are pretty close to Hexs just take a bit less power and are likely a newer model. The D661s are 2.7" if that is in issue as well.

TruckSystem - good point - I meant the D661s (missed that one). Hifonics will impress you and deliver for a a nice price. Boston may have the name but unless you're looking at the high high end they don't impress me. I actually gave away my Boston Rallies when I sold my Civic (sold them with the car), they were decent but now I have a lot better. ------------- (1) Kenwood Excelon Head Unit KDC-X589 (24 bit Burr Brown DAC, 3 X 4 volt RCA).

Well the Boston's I would be looking at would be the Boston Pro's.....even though at retail they are out of my range. I could probably pick them up cheaper onine somewhere.
