if you could give me any and/or all info on installing a video game system into a car.... i'm installing an xbox into an audi a4 wtih an avic-n1 headunit

you really just need a power inverter of some sort to power the x-box and contec the video out put of the x'box to the video input and same with the l and r outputs. its simple

the power inverters i found online all seem to plug into the av outlet, are there any that i can hardwire or something so that i dont have to use that outlet?

you can hard wire them,, just make sure you fine something that can handle the extra load, and i'd probably fuse it.... ------------- Bad Boys Customs

Most inverters that I have seen give off a pretty dirty power signal which itroduces alot of noise into the Xbox. If you are willing to invest the time and money into it I would recommend getting something like a Opus 120 which is a PC power supply for cars that gives nice clean power and then a apache converter to use the supply in a X-box. It will set you back a few hundred dollars but will be worth it on the long run and you wont have to worry about the inverter draining your battery when the car is turned off which they will do over time.

I agree that the Opus/converter setup would be really nice, it just seems a bit overboard. I'd just get a high quality inverter. Thats the way 99.9% of folks go about it and it works pretty good. I recommend Coleman inverters, they are the best that I have dealt with. ------------- Nik

What size power inverter do you recommend for this xbox? I sometimes run my laptop that drains a bit of power with it's 17" screen but I can only use the inverter with the car running or a full battery. If I try to charge my battery and run my laptop at the same time with the car turned off the 400w red inverter will start beeping its overload sound. Would a better brand or higher output power inverter help me? The laptop has a 180w power inverter. Is it really inefficient to be converting dc to ac then ac to dc. With the playstations you can get some type of voltage stabalizer right. ------------- Poly Dollies

Also, if you are worried about noise, don't buy a cheap inverter with "square-wave" or "modified sine wave" outputs. It will cost you QUITE a bit more money, (about twice) but a "true sine-wave" inverter will give you an electrical output that is the SAME as your house outlets. Also, isn't the power input for an XBox 12 volts anyway? If this is the case, all you need to do is build a regulator box, an plug it right into the electrical system of the car...
As far as power demands? an XBox should use about a 150 to 200 watt "true sine-wave" inverter (get one with about 400 to 500 watts peak).
hurtado_roberto, as to the 400 watt inverter you are using for your laptop, I'd use an inverter with a higher PEAK capacity. I am betting this 400 watt number is for it's PEAK operating power, not continuous. This is probably why it's "overloading". Also, the starting requirements for laptop bricks is WELL beyod their continuous duty rating.

I have a xbox in my xB. I tried the Install Bay (Metra brand) MPI-200 and the MPI-400 and had noise through my headphones and through the radio. I went up to the MPI-800 and have no noise problems now. the MPI-800 is quite big (but it is 800 watts) and the down side is there is no on/off "toggle" switch but it is a momentary on/off switch. so you can't leave the inverter "on", once you disconnect power to the inverter you have to hit the on/off button to turn it back on. a pain if you hide the inverter. I also used the Monster Cable 50 power inverter and it did a good job also. no noise and it was small. shame I had to give it back to my friend.
