after doing some research on the net ive came up with 3 headunits i'm debating over.

currently i have a cheap pioneer unit i got from wal*mart a while ago, and time for a new one.

im deciding between a alpine headunit since everyone seems to love them. not sure what model type. either a 9830, 9831, 9851, 9847, or 9853.

or a pioneer deh-p7700mp. ive heard good comments about those.

can any1 give me some feedback on which one would be my best bet?

in my opinion if you dont really care about looks then go with alpine, but if you want the 7700 because of the OEL display then go with pioneer just depends on what you like more

If you want a Pioneer thats going to match up to an alpine, this year you have got to step up to the deh-80mp, its the step above the 7700, it gives you 4 volt preouts at 100ohms as opposed to 2.2 at 1.1kohms. Plus it even has more eye candy than the 7700mp

i don't like alpine but it's ten times better than pioneer.

The Pioneer has been a great company for me with very little problems and the discs never skip. If you've had a Pioneer for a while now and it's the cheap system from Wal-Mart, then getting a higher end one will only be that much better. Alpine is OK, but since they've been manufacturing them in the USA, the quality has gone to craps. I use to have Alpine's in my systems when they were manufactured in Japan and they were bullet proof then.

i would also go with the pioneer

the tuning options on the 7700 and for that matter the 6700 are awesome especially if you're gonna be adding amplifiers

you've got  the the 3 band parametric which can be tuned several different ways for different tastes, and then the High Pass Filter and Low Pass Filter with adjustable sub and crossover control so you have a good bit of options

and also the cosmetics are pretty nice for a radio under 300.00

alpine on the other hand makes a very nice product also so just my .02 cents

I use to be a Pioneer advocate and i am in no way saying that pioneers are bad h/u's, but a friend of mine convinced me to try alpine several years ago.  Every h/u i've bought since has been alpine.  Alpines are not as "user friendly" to tune, but if you take the time to tune them, you get WAY MORE for your money! If you want a h/u to build a system off of, I'd go with Alpine. out of the h/u's you listed, I'd get the CDA-9853.

Just my opinion though....

you could beat the hell outta both of them with an eclipse.

Eclipse makes a great headunit, but it is not better than either of the two manufactuers in question. Plus the Eclipse defect rate is higher than Pioneer or Alpine. Pioneer is the #1 selling hedunit line in the U.S., so they have to be doing something right. As for Alpine being "10x better than Pioneer" all I have to say is check your data.

If you are going to buy a Pioneer I would recommend the DEH-P80Mp, but you wouldn't be disappointed with the 7700MP either. And really the way I look at it is like this, you can't really go wrong with Pioneer or Alpine. It just boils down to what you like better.

Couldn't have said it better myself. In the end it comes down to personal preference and also what your use to installing.

My $500MSRP Alpine headunit is about 14 months old and freakin "///Alpine" sticker is peeling off.

I couldn't even begin to express my utter distaste for this head-unit.
It is the most unintuitively designed unit I've ever used. You can't even change the treble or bass up and down a notch. You have to create a new eq file, save it, then load it into memory. You can adjust the subwoofer volume but not turn it off.. that feature is BURIED under menus harder to unearth than the freakin EQ...

It replaced a Pioneer DEH7400MP that had FAR inferior manufacturers specifications but was easily the better deck. The *only* thing I could give Alpine is that it finds MP3's a little faster.

Yes, *EVERY* chance I get I complain about Alpine headunits.

At least try using one before you spend real money on basura gear like that.

I've got the Pioneer deh-p7600mp and I love it. It has a ton of tunability options, and it has performed reliably with very high quality sound. It's not the highest end unit out there, but it does the job nicely, and the graphics are cool to boot.

I love my DEH-P7400MP. Haven't had a problem yet. And I've beat that HU to hell and back.
