I currently have installed in my 2000 Grand am are a set of 5.25 kappa components in front and some kappa 6x9's in rear all powered by a Hifonics Zues 6400. I plan on instlalling some ID subs and either a soundstream van gogh or a Hifonics Mono block. Either way i plan on pushing around 1000 RMS to the subs and my interiors already see around 350RMS. How big of an alternator will i need to get to supply my system with sufficient power. I also have an Optima Redtop already installed. places to buy??

It really isn't going to be a matter of "how big an alternator" rather than "what can I actually buy?"

It is.. like .. "I'm going to put two huge amps in my car, what will run them" .. so many variables come into play, who really knows right?

1) Grab the biggest Iraggi you can.

https://search.stores.ebay.com/search/search.dll?query=pontiac&srchdesc=y&fcl=3&fci=-1&fcd=2&fsn=Iraggi+Alternator...

2)Save urself a headache and get a Yellow, eh?! With 800watts/rms I can kill a RedTop during my lunch break! Those do real well in the standard SLI durability tests, but they really can't take the load of a properly bi-amped car stereo. Not at all.

3) Ya know what the 'Big 3' wiring upgrade is?

You don't want to dump a whole lot of money on this part.

Wow. Who does?

I already told you, it is going to be a matter of what you can get. Getting a direct-bolt on HO alternator often doesn't involve a tremendous amount of choices.

There are 50 alternators for Pontiacs listed in the link above.. I'd recommend you email that rebuilder and see what he can do for you. Iraggi makes really nice alts.

Still, if you want something you can just click and buy, here is a decent one for $200.. pretty cheap for a HO alt.. and the rebuilder is pretty good too. I got my alt from him:

Mr.Alternator

Output at idle was a little low.. but that is pretty standard for rebuilt alternators like that. Another reason why ya want a Yellow eh?

Naww, RedTops really don't stand up to car stereos. S'okay.. you'll be back in a few weeks talking about battery problems.

Big3 Wiring Upgrade (VERY Important):

With 4-gauge wire and ring terminals, rewire this stuff under your hood. Vastly improved charging system performance.

1)From positive post of alternator --> positive post of battery

2)Engine chassis groud --> chassis

3)Battery negative post --> chassis

If you need more help with this critical upgrade, post back and we'll see about getting you some pictures okay?

$200 for a 200 amp alternator is cheap as hell. I don't trust that cheap. Tried it with Alterstart and now I have a standard 105a alt in my car that started out at $200 and ended up costing a total of $700 plus. You aren't going to want to spend a lot of money, but for something that is going to be well backed, you're going to have to. Now given I've heard good stuff about Mr Alt but I haven't really researched it. And since sedate is trying to neglect really informing you, if you don't know already. You have a specific design mounting for your alternator, which for a standard bolt on process can limit you to how much power you can possibly put on there. Physical size is worthless, because if it is huge, it probably won't fit. You need something that you can have mounted directly in place, or something that comes with mounting brackets that you can use the bigger alt. I'd suggest the mount in place as I know my 98 Monte Carlo came with a 105a stock alternator and that is running my amp perfectly fine. 1300wRMS I believe. I have a 2nd battery(Yellow Top) in the back just to help out if need be. Best thing to do is try out some websites online, call and ask what will fit your car without any brackets and see how much amperage you can get on that, if you really need a huge upgrade. A 150a alt will hold entirely fine I am pretty sure. Some sites I've heard of:

Mr Alternator
Mechman
Ohio Generator
Stinger

I will suggest avoiding alterstart, piss poor customer service and entirely puts out piss poor work. First alt fried a battery, 2nd alt couldn't put out 180a no matter what. Maxed out like 119a for a freak second. Didn't even get my first name right, fing morons.
