Hey all,

New to the forum, but I was told this was the place to go to get great help. I have a 1997 Jeep Cherokee (not Grand) that I am wanting to put a subwoofer enclosure in the back of it. It is an offroad vehicle but when I am driving it, I am missing my lower end badly. So basically, I wanted to find out from you all what kind of amps, etc you would recommend for the setup I am interested in doing.

I currently have a Kenwood Excelon receiver upfront, the X859 version, and I have Pioneer premier 6 1/2's up front and 6 1/2's in the rear speaker bar all running from the stock factory amp. I would like to add either one or two of the new Pioneer shallow subs in their shallow sealed enclosure to the back since they seem to be great and are small in design so they won't take up too much room. Initially this is what I would love to do to the back here:

But I was told the biggest I could fit would be a 10" in this space, when I really would like a 12". The other issue with this install is that it really seems to me that it has to be sealed extremely well inside the jeep so no air escapes. This is what the spot looks like stock:

The subs specs are:

The box's specs are:

The pioneer 6 1/2 specs are:

Watts Nominal Power Handling 35 Watts
Frequency Response 30Hz ~ 33kHz
Sensitivity (1W/1m) 90dB
Ohm Rating 4

So basically what I am looking from you all is help on deciding what kind of amp (and how many) I need for this setup to run nice. Didn't know if I need a mono to push the 300 for the sub and a 4 channel for the rest, etc. I am pretty set on getting the sub, so not looking to get talked out of it. I had originally thought about a Bazooka, Infinity Basslink, or custom install in the rest side hole in the back, but that really wouldn't give me room for a 12". I could have an installer do a setup on the right side in that hole in the back using that same shallow depth sub, but it would cost more than just getting the box that was made for the sub. I am also looking for advice on whether I need any other additional components that I forgot about (capacitors, etc)

Also, not looking to get high dollar amps, just looking to get some good amps that will really perform well and last.

IMO dont waste your money on pioneer. get the Blaupunkt Overdrive 12s. mounting depth (i think) is 2.5-3 inches and it only requires .5 ft3. the 10s require .35 ft3. i did a box for 2 10s in a very limited airspace application and i was shocked by the sound. very clear and loud. extremely good quality subs. run 300-400 rms and they will sound good.

Sounds good, but since I am not an installer, I want to either find a box, like the Pioneer box above, that I can fit either behind the rear seat or along the side and not take up much room. The back is used alot for tools, etc and so I am trying save as much space as I can. I would love to have an installer do the install you saw above with the side panel, but I guess I am kinda worried that they won't fill in all the air spaces necessary or it will rattle too much. But then again, this is stuff I don't know tons about. JL audio used to make a box that went in the back along the side that I would love to do, but not sure how much it would cost to have someone make it or just do it:

So the question is, should I just get a shallow box to put behind the seat or should I let an installer do a custom box along the side like the JL's or put it in the side itself? If I let an installer do that, how much should I look to be paying. Again, this is not going to be a comp system, just something to complete the system.

Also, the other thing I wanted to know is if I should get a 4 channel to run the 6 1/2's and a mono to run the sub or should I just not do an amp for the 6 1/2's and keep them on the stock amp?

man u should try jl audio for a stealth box would propbably sound the best.. they may cost alil more up front but they sound amazing.. or u you could try mtx for a thunderform.. not sure how they sound but shoudl be decent.. you could run the 4 channel and the mono block ... that would be the best way or you could get a 5 channel amp but those rn't always the best...jl audio is ur best bet for sounding the best

Yeah, well JL audio doesn't make the box anymore for the Cherokee's, just the Grand Cherokee's, so I'm outta luck there. And now sure if the MTX thunderform is what I want either because it is only a 10" and if fits on the left hand side if you have your spare tire there, which I don't anymore. Which is why I am trying to figure out what is the best option to go with and get some advice from the people who know.
