Hi,

I have a Sony Xplod head unit claiming 50W x 4 running front component speakers and rear speakers, both rated about 30W nominal (~100W max). I know, I'm not trying to rattle anything, but I'd like to be able to crank it up a bit louder without getting distortion. Is there any point in me buying a small amp (preferably 4 ch) which outputs something closer to the rating of the speakers? The head unit is probably really about 15W per channel right?

I also have an bridged amp running a sub at 100W. Whooaarrrr......

Thanks.

I think that you already know the answer and answered your own question. The answer is yes if you want something louder and cleaner then get an amp. I would get an amp just over the power rating of you speakers.
