my friend set the balance at R1 as opposed to center to make it sound like i am sitting in the middle of the car. sounds good, but will this result in a shorter life for the right side speakers? also, does playing with the balance apply to the subwoofers?

Speaker life - no.

Sub - depends on the setup.  Mono amp?  No difference.  Sub running on left channel?  Some difference.

Balance and fade work like this:  when you set the control over to, let's say the right side, you are NOT adding signal to the right side.  Instead, you are SUBTRACTING signal from the LEFT side.  Fade works the same way with front to rear.  So, with those controls, you are always taking away from output instead of adding to it.  Knowing that, you can be assured that no matter how far you adjust balance and fade, there will be no added power applied to the speakers.

At the bottom of https://www.bcae1.com/headunit.htm is an interactive demo.
