I have a 96' Impala SS. I made an 20" square enclosure for my 4 ohm Cerwin Vega 124 (12" single voice coil). I cut a 12 x 12 opening in my deck lid to get better response.

The problem: Sub sounds super sweet with trunk lid open or even cracked open. Sub sounds performance is horrible when the trunk is closed!

Any ideas???

Sub is pointed face up, about 4" away from the deck lid with 12" x 12" opening I cut in it.

I would position the sub facing the rear of the trunk. This will allow time for the low frequency sound waves to develop and give you louder deeper bass tones. Position the box in several spots in the trunk to see what will give you the best sound.

MYTH! Low frequency waves do NOT need distance to develope properly.

What you are experiencing by opening the trunk is a reduction in phase cancellation. Your enclosure is aimed improperly. I recommend tha tyou read this:

I usually get the best bass response by facing the subs towards the rear trunk like jstruck mentioned.

That's a very interesting article.  Do you happen to know if  facing the sub down to the floor in a large vehicle (such as a van) hurt the performance at all? Eddie's article didn't make that clear (or I missed it...).

Thanks

Jeff

Fellas, I moved the enclosure back towards the tail lights, which was about 20" from where it was. Impala has a huge trunk. It is still facing upwards toward the trunk lid and now it sounds SWEET! Thanks Jazzy.

If it is still facing the lid you are minimizing the reinforcement value.... I believe I've heard it compared to water/dispersion, which if you look at it like that makes a very good point. But meh. If it sounds good enough to ya, ok.
