Hi guys, this is my first post. I have been lurkig around here soaking up everything I can. I am pretty clear on most of my car audio stuff and have been doing my own installs with varying degress of results for several years. Recently I started another install for my car It started with certain componants and now I am trying to figure out what to do with my upgrades:

My problem is on the bass end so let me just go over my subwoofer/amp setup with you guys and maybe you could tell me what you would recommend.

2 Kicker CVR Dual 4 Ohm Voice Coil, wired currently for a 4 Ohm mono load.

Slot ported box, seperate chambers, tuned to 30 Hz

TWO Pioneer PRS-X720 Amplifiers. Currently only one is hooked up, the other is on its way right now. Here is my issue.

The PRS-X720's put out roughly 750 watts rms on a 4 ohm mono load. So right now each of my subs is getting perhaps 350+ watts rms. I would like to use one amp per sub and perhaps overdrive it a bit for some extra performance. My concerns...

1. I know CVR's are tough, does anyone here have experience running 6-700 watts rms to them? Is it a good idea? The Pioneers are VERY clean amps.

2. I would prefer not to unscrew the subs and rewire them , so would it hurt my sound quality if I ran each one at 2 Ohm mono on its own amp? I would have to adjust the gain accordingly since they just may put out damn near 1400 watts at 2 ohm mono.

3. I can already drain my battery in twenty minutes, and its a decent sized one...between these two amps and the alpine 3555 (50w rms x 4) I have driving my kappas, am I asking too much for one battery and charging system? I already have gold terminals/fuses etc, but am I just sucking too much damn power?

Thanks in advance for anyone who can chip in on any of these questions, I joined this forum because I know the best are here :] If any more clarification is needed about my setup please ask, thanks!

You can run a load of no lower than 4 ohms bridged onto one of these two-channel amps.  With the subs being DVC 4 ohm, one sub per amp is not a good matchup as the wiring of the coils will have to be either 2 ohm or 8 ohm.

The dual two-ohm version of those Kicker subs would be ideal to match one-on-one with the amps.  Each could be wired to 4 ohms, the subs have RMS capability of 400 watts, the amps put out 400 watts into 4 ohms bridged (mono).

I'm feeding my (2) 4ohm DVC CVR's 787watts RMS and I'm pretty sure they can handle alot more. I'm underpowering them but they sound great.

The amps are actually better than the specs you found suggest. It's Pioneer thing, they decided to make a cheater amp for whatever reason, you can be sure it is 2 ohm mono stable, and the real output is closer to 750 watts rms @ 4 ohm mono, it's one of the most under-rated amps ever produced. That being said, do you recommend against running them 2 ohm mono?

Are you giving them that much each or both together? and are you running a sealed box? Thanks!

You can run a load of no lower than 4 ohms bridged onto one of these two-channel amps.

Running 4 ohms bridged requires that the amp be stable at 2 ohms.  Running 2 ohms bridged requires that the amp be stable at 1 ohm.  Stability is per channel.

You should contact a Pioneer tech before you run that amp with a 2 ohm bridged load.

Yes, you are correct, most amps only handle 4 ohm mono, and the advice to talk to a Pioneer rep is well taken. I am very familiar with these amps though and have spoken to many people about them, they are capable of 1 ohm stereo, 2 ohm mono. there was even a guy who ran a .7 ohm mono load on one for about ten seconds at high volume, burnt his speakers to a crisp but the amp was unharmed..lol but i'm not that stupid. thanks for being so careful though, that's the whole reason I come here, excellent advice. :]

As for the power situation, yes you will definately be overdrawing too much power from your car, you need a high output alternator to be able to properly power those amp. if you don't have a good charging system you may as whell just buy a legacy amp.

The alternator I have is something like 120-130 amps, it's a big v8, if thats not enough is there a place you guys can recommend to buy another one? it's the ford 4.6 so one of those extra duty HO cop alternators might work too.

its pretty sad i know all these web site from the top of my head...i think im the only one on here that pushes alternators like crack haha.

Does anyone else have any input on whether or not a 12 inch Kicker CVR is safe to run about 600-1000 watts rms in a ported box?
