I plan to connect two pair of 4 ohm speakers for my front stage in series @ 8 ohm rather than parallel @ 2 ohm.  I thought it would be easier to just run the wires all the way to the speakers from the amp.  Then near the amp, connect the + & - of either speaker together and then the  - & + to the amp to make the series connection.  I know these will be fairly long runs (amp under passenger seat) so my question is: is this is too long?  It would be a pain to run a single wire from one speaker to another to and then a single wire from each to the amp to make the series connection.  Not like speaker wire is all that costly anyhow.  I guess I could solder the connection and use a wire nut on it for protection.

That will be fine.  I suggest soldering the connection and then insulating it with tape or shrink tubing.  Wire nuts can vibrate off in a car.
